Donald Trump’s campaign has accused British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor Party of “foreign interference” in the US presidential election after volunteers traveled to the United States to help campaign for Kamala Harris.
The campaign has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission in Washington, asking for an immediate investigation into what it calls “illegal foreign national contributions made by the British Labor Party and received by Harris for President”.
The complaint cited media reports and a now-deleted LinkedIn post from Sofia Patel, chief operating officer at the British Labor Party, who wrote that “nearly 100” current and former Labor Party staffers would travel to the US in the coming weeks to help elect Harris. , the Democratic vice president.
“Those looking for foreign interference in our elections need look no further than (the) LinkedIn posts,” the complaint letter said. “The disruption is clearly occurring.”
The centre-left Labor Party, which sees the US Democrats as a sister party, came to power in July. Starmer has since sought to establish a relationship with Trump, meeting him at Trump Tower during a visit to New York in September.
Starmer, traveling on a plane to Samoa, told reporters that he does not expect a complaint to strain relations with Trump if he wins the election on November 5, adding that Labor volunteers have almost every US election.
“They do it in their free time, they do it as a volunteer, I stay with the other volunteers there,” he said.
“That’s what we’ve done in previous elections, that’s what we’ve done in this election and it’s really straightforward.”
