evilan adaptation of the popular Broadway musical of the same name, hitting theaters on Friday, November 22, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are a pair of witches, who will one day become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North. Part 2 of the saga will be released next year on November 21, 2025.
When Elphaba (Erivo) and Galinda/Glinda (Grande), arrive in the Emerald City during the first act of the film, they are greeted by hundreds of Ozian citizens. Two faces in the crowd played by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowethwho famously played the roles of Elphaba and Galinda in the OG Broadway production.
Theater lovers and moviegoers alike are counting down the days until the premiere film adaptation of Broadway’s Wicked. In the scene, Menzel, 53, and Chenoweth, 56, portray the performers and lead the troupe. He joins in singing “One Short Day,” to tell the origin story of how Oz was founded and how the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) initially came to town. The filmed adaptation features an extended version of the song, in which rival musicians Menzel and Chenoweth try to outdo and outdo one another.
evil adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, serving as a prequel to Wizard of Oz. It depicts the history of the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and the Good Witch of the North (Glinda) as they become roommates at the magical Shiz University.
The musical was first mounted in 2003, starring Menzel as the green witch and Chenoweth as the wildly popular Glinda.
“The love story is really between two girls. It’s about their bond,” Chenoweth said exclusively Us Weekly in May. “It didn’t start out that way, so Idina and I feel blessed to be a part of what we can do in this world of musical theater.”
The Broadway musical Wicked has been adapted into two films, and Cynthia Erivo likes the film to evolve into a stage version. “What’s great about the show is that you can find out why this woman is the Wicked Witch of the West, but you only have three hours to do it,” (…)
Five months later, Chenoweth doesn’t know if she and Menzel have a secret role in Jon M. Chu’s big screen adaptation. evil.
“(I) can’t confirm or deny,” Chenoweth teased us in October. “I can’t do it, but I can say that I know I speak for Idina and we both (when I speak) … we are both very happy for the girls. We can’t wait for them to take on the character.
Menzel and Chenoweth even joined Erivo, 37, and Grande, 31, for the film’s Los Angeles premiere earlier this month. He also often praised the two actresses who took over the now iconic roles.
“(Cynthia) is really good and I don’t give advice because she doesn’t need advice,” Menzel said. The Hollywood Reporter at the 2024 Tony Awards in June. “I think she is very talented. I am just proud and proud that it will reach a wider audience. I know it is in good hands with her. She knows the character and everything about the green girl.
