David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) comes face-to-face with his late wife’s killer in Coronation Street this week, while Clayton Hibbs (Callum Harrison) makes an unwelcome return to the soap.
Last seen four years ago, Clayton – who is the son of David’s current wife Shona (Julia Goulding) – is currently in prison for the murder of Kylie Platt (Paula Lane) in 2016.
Returning to the screen will have huge repercussions for Shona and David, who also navigate big changes in the family, in the midst of their mother Gail (Helen Worth) plans to sell up and move away from Weatherfield.
If you need a recap, here’s a rundown of the villainous characters…
Who is Clayton Hibbs in Coronation Street?
Clayton debuted in 2016 and was introduced as the half-brother of Macca Hibbs (Gareth Berliner), and an old friend of Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) and Callum Logan (Sean Ward).
He quickly causes trouble for Gemma at the Prima Doner kebab shop where she works, before attempting to steal from the factory.
He knocks Gemma unconscious during the altercation, and when her friend Kylie steps in to try and help, Clayton stabs her in the chest and flees the scene.
Kylie later died in her husband David’s arms as he surrounded her on the cobbles in an emotional scene.
In an emotional scene, David is cradling his dying wife on the cobbles as she bleeds to death in his arms.
David would try to kill Clayton, before the teenager was finally arrested and eventually given a life sentence, with a minimum of 15 years.
David later finds love with Clayton’s mother, Shona, only to be surprised by her son’s identity. Eventually, David overcame this and the couple got married in 2019.
Clayton is last seen in 2020 when Shona visits him in jail after losing his memory.
Since then, she and David have agreed not to talk about Clayton again and she has rejected her son – but last week, David was shocked to receive an email and phone call from her in prison…
What happens next?
David decides to keep Clayton’s attempts to contact him and Shona a secret from his wife and plans to see him in prison.
The visit had big consequences later that week, when the police told Shona that Clayton was in the hospital after a suicide attempt.
Shona is in a blind panic, desperate to see her son – but will David come clean about his attempts to block contact?
What is being said about Clayton Hibbs’ return to Coronation Street?
Actress Julia Goulding has revealed how Shona and David could ‘destroy each other’ when they discover their big secret.
“When Shona found out her husband had set her on fire and had a part in Clayton’s suicide attempt, I dreaded what she would do,” Julia said. ‘But I don’t think he’ll take it lying down!
‘There’s a lot of anger and hurt, the possibility of destroying each other,’ he continued. “Trudging through treacle might be a good analogy,” he adds.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
