The sky was steel gray and the temperature dropped; any wonder I dream of a holiday?
While other countries create Black Friday hit lists made up of kitchen appliances, personal technology and cheap gifts to wrap under the Christmas tree, my eyes are fixed on flight and hotel deals. For me, the rush to take a getaway at a bargain price is too much to get rid of the winter blues.
Two years ago, I booked a cheap flight to Aqaba in South Jordan to visit the Petra Treasury and sleep under the stars in the desert. This year, Budapest’s buffet of world-renowned culture, food and spas is the fruit of the Black Friday hunt. Where is this time? The juiciest offer will say.
If you are hoping to book a cheap flight, there are a few things to note for success.
How to shop for Black Friday flights
Airlines tend to sell seats for a limited time, generally between Black Friday and March of the following year (excluding Christmas and New Year). Mark potential dates and secure annual leave before the official event begins November 29 to keep dithering at the crucial moment to a minimum. As you can imagine, Black Friday flight deals are enormously popular and sell out quickly; you may find the seat swiped out from under you if you hang around for too long.
Another way to get from A to B
Consider alternative means of transport, such as the train or road, especially if you are visiting another corner of the UK. These deals are generally cheaper and you’ll reduce your carbon footprint to boot.
Think about your 2025 schedule
Looking for hotel deals? The rules are a little more forgiving. Staycations tend to have longer departure times, so whether you’re hoping to nab a Cotswold Cottage for Easter or want to secure a local bed for a 2025 gig, you’ll have better luck here. Plus, an overnight spa break and a stay at a nice B&B in the southeast will feel like a bargain given the extra treatment or short travel time.
Find your dream vacation – for less
Don’t forget that package holiday and luxury travel operators are also joining the Black Friday sales, allowing you to get a five-star holiday for a three-star price. From exhilarating African safaris, romantic Indian Ocean breaks and memory-making Orlando vacations, I’ve seen some incredible deals on this once-in-a-lifetime break over the past Black Fridays.
What travel deals can we expect this year?
While there are exciting deals on business class seats, budget airlines such as easyJet and WizzAir have been known for their economy fares of just £19.99 one-way. Meanwhile, hotel groups like Yotel, Iberostar and IHG are cutting up to 40 percent off selected room rates, from beachfront resorts in the Med to city spots for weekend getaways. And Eurostar claims it will not participate in Black Friday, but it just happened to continue the sale of seats on the same date last year – but hey, who splits the hair in the face of a great deal?

When does Black Friday end?
While most deals will end on December 2, the Monday after Black Friday known as Cyber Monday, a new phenomenon has extended the date – at least for travel. The next day is known as Travel Tuesday (this year December 3), the last call for all travel deals.
Why is it called Black Friday?
From keeping the bank balance in the black to the presence of traffic smoke choking the road on og Black Friday in 70s Philadelphia, there are many reasons in the world to call this sale Black Friday. Whatever the real reason, you can’t argue that it’s pretty catchy.
