Prince William was in celebratory mood last night after Aston Villa secured their third successive Champions League win to continue their dream start in Europe.
The Prince of Wales, a lifelong Villa fan, could not contain his excitement after Unai Emery’s side won 2-0 against Bologna to maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition.
During the match, former Scotland striker and TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist speculated that Prince William would be one of the Villa fans watching at home.
Prince William, who honored McCoist with an OBE at Windsor Castle earlier this month, gave an unprecedented personal response via social media as he delighted in Aston Villa’s victory.
Although the Royal Family doesn’t normally interact with commercial enterprises, the Prince of Wales retweeted TNT’s tweet about Villa’s victory and wrote: ‘Of course I watched, @Ally_McCoist9.’
The future monarch, who sometimes takes his son Prince George to games at Villa Park, signed a ‘W’ for William and #UTV, which stands for ‘Up the Villa’.

It comes after Prince William and McCoist recently crossed paths at Windsor Castle, where the former Rangers striker was awarded an OBE for services to football and broadcasting.
On the day, McCoist shared a photo of Prince William presenting the award and wrote: “A proud moment for me and my family, I am humbled to receive an OBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle today.
‘Thank you for all the support and messages it means a lot.’
In the tweet, before Aston Villa’s stunning win over Bayern Munich, he also laughed: ‘Are we talking about Aston Villa?? It’s between the Prince and me (wink emoji).’
Speaking about his meeting with the Prince of Wales, McCoist told The Scottish Sun: “I think the fact that we’ve met before and talked before is a good comfort level.
‘It’s good, it’s special. You sometimes worry if there is something to say, if there is something to say, but he puts everyone at ease. I really enjoyed the conversation for a few minutes.
“I know clearly that the prince is an Aston Villa fan – he has a huge game tonight, which I think he will do.
