Oscar race around the world: Taiwan Submits ‘Old Fox’

Taiwan has chosen the multi-award winning drama film “Outdated Fox” as a consultant in the most effective characteristic class at the 97th Academy Awards. The island’s Ministry of Tradition said it chose “Outdated Fox” from 14 candidate films.

Directed by Hsiao Ya-chuan, the film tells the story of the moral conflict of an 11-year-old boy from a humble background. He is torn between the age of hardscrabble and penny-pinching of his single-parent father and the attraction of the neighboring landlord, who offers wealth and class in his streetwise pragmatism.

The central performance of child star Bai Run-jin (who previously appeared in “Pricey Tennant”) and actor-writer Akio Chen elevates their triangular relationship into an award-winning effort. The picture premiered at the Tokyo Worldwide Film Competition before becoming the number one winner at Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Horse Film Awards next month. While missing out on the most effective film prize, “Outdated Fox” collected 4 prizes along with best director and best supporting actor for Chen.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2. The Oscars shortlists can be introduced on December 17, and nominations can be revealed on January 17. The submission deadline for the World Characteristic Film class is October 2nd. The eligibility interval for the class is November 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.

Latvia: ‘Movement’

Latvia has chosen Gints Zilbalodis’ “Movement” as an entry in the class of the most effective world characteristics of the 97th Academy Awards. The animated feature premiered to the world in the Un Sure Regard section of the Cannes Film Competition and won 4 prizes in Annecy.

Sideshow and Janus Movies acquired North American rights to the film from Cannes and plan a theatrical release this 12 months.

In Annecy, “Gerakan” won the Audience Award, the Jury Award, the special prize for original music and the Gan Basis Award for Distribution. You should also screen at the Toronto Film Competition next month.

“Movement” follows a brave cat after her home is destroyed by an incredible flood. Joining the capybara, lemur, chicken and dog to navigate the ship in search of dry land, they must rely on trust, courage and ingenuity to survive the dangers of the newly aquatic planet.

The film was co-written by Zilbalodis and Matiss Kaza, with ratings by Zilbalodis and Rihards Zalupe. It was produced by Zilbalodis and Kaza, along with Ron Dyens and Gregory Zalcman. Worldwide gross sales agent is Charades.

Zilbalodis’ “Away” won the Contrechamp Award for Best Film at Annecy in 2019.

The Latvian selection is made by the Latvian Selection Committee, a film business specialist fee established by the Nationwide Movie Middle.

Austria: ‘The Satan’s Tub’

“The Satan’s Tub,” an interval psychological thriller competing in the Berlin Film Competition, has been submitted by Austria as the official Oscar entry for the worldwide characteristic film race. The film took home the Silver Bear for best cinematography (for Martin Gschlacht) at the Berlinale.

The film was directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the Austrian filmmaking duo behind “Goodnight Mommy,” which bowed in Venice and also represented Austria in the Oscar race.

Set in rural Austria in 1750, the film focuses on Agnes, a younger married girl who feels oppressed in the world of her husband, who has no emotions and only fulfills duties and expectations. A pious and extremely gentle girl, Agnes fell right into deep despair, before committing a stunning act of violence that she saw as one approach out of her interior prison.

The film is being handled by Shudder in North America. Streamer also takes for U.Okay., Eire, Australia and New Zealand. It has been acquired worldwide by Playtime.

“The Satan’s Tub” is produced by Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion, in co-production with Heimatfilm and Coop99 Filmproduktion.

Eire: ‘Kneecap’

Eire has sent “Kneecap” to characterize the nation in the Oscars class of the world characteristic film.

The film was a sensation at Sundance, where it was acquired by Sony Footage Classics, and has been garnering praise at festivals around the world over the past few months.

From writer-director Wealthy Peppiatt, “Kneecap” is a semi-autobiographical comedy about an outspoken, hard-partying Northern Irish hip-hop trio of the same identity.

“Kneecap” was produced by Trevor Birney and Jack Tarling for Effective Level Films and Mother Tongue Films, with Patrick O’Neill at Wildcard appearing as co-producer.
