Former Georgia special prosecutor Nathan Wade was criticized on social media Wednesday for recent comments about Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as one law professor noted, “This is gross.”
Wade, who resigned in March, was one of the prosecutors in the Georgia election meddling case against former president Donald Trump and 18 others accused of trying to overturn the state’s 2020 election loss. The presumptive Republican presidential candidate, who has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, lost the state by about 12,000 votes.
Wade was forced to resign from the case in mid-March after his relationship with Willis, who brought the case, was revealed. Judge Scott McAfee, who oversaw the case, ruled there was no conflict of interest but Willis could only stay if Wade quit.
On Tuesday, Wade appeared on a segment of The Daily Show from Choppin’ It Up With’ Quon whose romantic relationship with Willis is brought up as Marlon Wayans’ in-character play ‘Quon asks a suggestive question.
Newsweek Wade has been reached by email for comment.
Wade began the interview by describing Willis as a “respected mother,” and a “brilliant legal mind,” adding that the couple “spent countless hours preparing for this case, investigating this case.”
However, when Wade navigates to answer the question, ‘Quon continues to jokingly interject by making suggestive comments about the couple’s relationship.
“I saw how it happened, countless hours, and I had to rub my legs, you know what I mean, and they rub your legs. , boom boom, we are up on this table,” said Quon.
However, Wade insisted that was not the case, saying, “No. Not close. Not close.”
In another part of the interview, ‘Quon asked who was interested in who Wade replied, “That’s a good question, right? So, during the investigation, we’ll meet in the mornings, weekends, spend the day-“
‘ Quon interrupted again to make another suggestive comment.
“Why didn’t you hit that?! Why didn’t you?!” interrupted Quon, as Wade laughed. “We spend a lot of time together, we do everything, maybe,” said Quon.
The interview has since received mixed reactions on social media, with some users criticizing Wade for engaging in commentary and publicizing it.
In a post to X, formerly of Twitter, Anthony Michael Kreis, professor of constitutional law at Georgia State University College of Law, criticized Wade’s comments as “cruel”, adding that Willis and the people of Fulton County deserve better.
“This is gross. Nathan Wade should be ashamed. And Fani Willis, whatever his fault, deserves better than this. Just like the people of Fulton County,” Kreis wrote.
Adding in a separate post, “Nathan Wade’s careless misogyny that pops out on national television. Can’t say Madam DA did not tell us on the stand though … About Nathan Wade I went from “he’s a human being who messed up bad” to “he’s relishing the massive f *** up.” The former is forgiven. The latter is not.”
User X The Shallow State wrote on X, “This is terrible, politically and generally”.
Also, political commentator Charlie Sykes wrote in X, “Stop. Just. Stop.”
Meanwhile, another in the comments of The Daily Show YouTube video praised the interview as one of the fans commented, “That’s hilarious. And the fact that you get a joke and can laugh, that really elevates and humanizes people. Great interview.”
This comes as Willis and the case continue to come under scrutiny, with some House members seeking to remove Willis from the case after allegations of wrongdoing. In addition, an appeals court in Georgia paused the continuation of the case against Trump, pending a decision on the defendants’ attempt to disqualify Willis from the investigation.
