Guido Migliozzi claimed his fourth DP World Tour title after going through a three-way play-off to claim a dramatic victory at the KLM Open.
Migliozzi had four bogeys in six holes on the turn but birdied two of the last three holes to post a final round of 70 at The International in Amsterdam, seeing him end the week in 11th alongside Marcus Kinhult and England’s Joe Dean.
The players returned to the par-five 18th for the play-off, where all three hit the green in two and two-putted for birdie, before Migliozzi won in impressive fashion at the second extra hole.
Dean had to lay up after finding the rough from the tee and Kinhult found the water with the second shot, leaving two posting pars, as Migliozzi reached the par-five green in two and two putted from just over 60 feet to close out a first win since the Open de France 2022.
“It was a good battle,” said Migliozzi, whose bogey on the 10th came after he couldn’t find his original drive in the three minutes he was allowed. “After I lost the ball in the inside 10 I was like ‘If I can get through this, then I can do it’.
“I never thought it would be over. I was always trying to make birdies and trying to come back and now now. It’s an incredible feeling.”
The victory lifted Migliozzi to eighth in the latest Race to Dubai standings, while Dean and Kinhult were second after final-round 68s. Migliozzi’s victory saw him qualify for The Open next month at Royal Troon, via the Open Qualifying Series, with Dean taking second place thanks to his higher world ranking than Kinhult.
Dean – who was also runner-up at the Magical Kenya Open and a part-time delivery driver earlier in the season – had finished the front nine with consecutive bogeys but shot five birdies after the turn to enter the play-off.
Kinhult sent back-to-back birdies from 16 and then holed from six feet at the end to save par and also finished at 11 in, while Rasmus Hojgaard finished shot back in tied-four with Andrea Pavan.
Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin ended the week tied for sixth on nine under, as overnight leader Mikko Korhonen struggled to close with a 75 to finish 10th in the series.
Postponement of protest from the final round
Tee times were delayed by two hours on Sunday when activists blocked access to the course. The first five groups were eliminated, but the remaining ones were expelled, the leaders finally started at 3 pm local time.
A spokesman for the DP World Tour said: “Play was disrupted for two hours when a small group of protesters blocked the entrance to the golf course. We would like to thank the marshals, players and spectators for their help when the situation has been resolved.”
