Primary in various states on Tuesday could affect Republicans’ chances of unseating Democrats in November and help decide whether the often unpredictable House Republicans who have vexed members of their own party will make it to the general election. Here are some races to watch:
Nevada Republicans chose their nominee to take on Democrat Sen. Jacky Rosen
Republicans will vote for the Senate nominee to try and defeat the Democratic incumbent Sen. Jackie Rosen this fall
Rosen’s Senate seat is one of the most vulnerable in the state in a closely watched battleground state that former President Donald Trump lost in 2016 and 2020. Rosen faces small-scale primary opposition on Tuesday.
In the GOP race to take on Rosen, Trump recently endorsed Republican Sam Brown who is running for the Nevada GOP Senate in 2022.
But Brown faces some major competition in his latest race, including from Jeff Gunter, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Iceland during Trump’s presidency.
Rep. Nancy Mace is trying to hold on to her seat in South Carolina amid GOP concerns
Republicans Rep. Nancy Mace faces a challenging path to re-election to her seat.
Mace, who was soon after January 6, 2021, Capitol attack said he holds Trump accountable, has since endorsed the former leading the 2024 presidency. Trump has also endorsed Mace.
But he has faced some pushback for being one of eight Republicans who helped oust Kevin McCarthy as Republican speaker of the House last fall.
Mace was the first group to be tested at the ballot box. He is being challenged in the Republican primary by Catherine Templeton, who served as director of the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation when former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley was in office before serving as director of the South Carolina Department of State. Environmental Health and Control.
A political action committee aligned with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has donated to Templeton’s campaign, according to federal campaign finance filings. In South Carolina, a primary candidate must get a majority of the vote in that special race to win the primary and avoid a runoff, according to the South Carolina election commission website. If that doesn’t happen, the runoff will be held on June 25.
Conservative incumbent Rep. William Timmons is facing a challenge in South Carolina
Elsewhere in South Carolina, GOP Rep. William Timmons is being challenged by fellow Republican Adam Morgan, a state representative who chairs the South Carolina Freedom Caucus. Timmons has been endorsed by Trump.
Maine’s main battleground district
Maine’s second congressional district is held by Democratic Rep. Jared Golden who has long been a key target for Republicans. The seat will again be closely watched this fall in a race that could help decide which party takes control of the House in November.
State representative and former NASCAR driver Austin Theriault is running for the Republican nomination against Maine House Rep. Mike Soboleski.
North Dakota chooses nominee to replace Governor Doug Burgum
In the reliably red state of North Dakota, Republicans are set to choose their nominee to replace current governor Doug Burgum. The Republican gubernatorial race is between Rep. Kelly Armstrong and Burgum Lt.- Gov. Tammy Miller.
Trump has endorsed Armstrong in this race, while Burgum has endorsed Miller.
