John Amos’ two children disagreed towards the end of their father’s life and family discord seemed to be brewing after his death.
A good actor, famous for his work in such projects West Wing, Good Timesand Rootdied at the end of August 2024. The news of his death, along with the cause of death, was announced by his son more than a month later.
The news shocked the world, including his sister, who only learned of their father’s death through the media.
So, what is the real problem between John Amos’ children? Why are they fighting? And why did his father’s departure do more to push him away?
Meet John Amos’ Children: Shannon and KC
John Amos, who died on August 21, 2024, played America’s father in the role of James Evans Sr. Good Times.
In real life, he is the father of two children: Shannon and KC Amos.
She welcomed two children with her ex-husband, Noel Mickelson; Shannon was born first in 1966, followed by KC in 1970.
Shannon has worked in the entertainment business for almost 20 years. They produce shows like Yo! MTV Raps and America’s Most Wanted. He also handles marketing for I’m a Legend and Blood diamonds.
After welcoming her daughter in 1991, she moved on and started a new career, launching a travel health company, Sumanah.
John’s son, Kelly Christopher, or KC as everyone calls him, is also following in his father’s footsteps to Hollywood. He has worked on various projects both directing and producing. He was even nominated for a Grammy for his work on James McMurtry’s “Where You Hide the Body” music video.
The Family Feud: How It Started
“All families go through trials and tribulations… We’re still a family… the bottom line.”
This is what John Amos had to say to People Magazine after a public dispute between his children. In the summer of 2023, the brothers are seen fighting all out over custody of their father.
In June 2023, Shannon accused an “unnamed caregiver” of “parental abuse”. He even started a GoFundMe in his name after receiving what he described as a “painful” phone call from his father.
Her lawsuit led to an investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and the arrest of her brother, who allegedly threatened her sister’s life after the allegations.
There was no investigation and John came out publicly to assure his fans he was fine. He also refused to punish his daughter for her demands.
“This is my child, my first child. I love him,” he explained.
“We just had … what can best be described (as) an acrimonious relationship, but everything heals in time, and the love is still there.”
Daughter of John Amos Sues Again for Elder Abuse
A year later, Shannon tried again to get the police to investigate claims of parental abuse.
He further asserted that his sister did not provide proper care to his 84-year-old father due to health problems.
The Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation, but within a month, the case was closed due to lack of evidence.
Shannon released a statement on Monday, April 8, expressing his disappointment in the LAPD’s decision.
“While I appreciate the LAPD’s efforts in my father’s case, I am disappointed in the conclusion that no one from my family has seen or spoken to my father since July 2023, when KC Amos, Eugene Brummet, and Belinda Foster removed him from a medical facility against doctor’s orders,” he said in a statement people.
“We continue to receive outreach from care providers, medical professionals, and others with evidence that raises concerns about their well-being and whether they are receiving the care they need.”
The War Continues After John Amos Death
John Amos’ death from natural causes was announced by his son on October 1st, although his father had died on August 21st.
“It is with great sadness that I share with you that my father has passed,” she said in a statement.
“He was the kindest person with a heart of gold … and he was loved all over the world.”
Shortly after her father’s death was announced, Shannon shared her tribute on Instagram – and admitted that she heard the news like everyone else: through the media.
“I can’t tell,” he began.
“This should be a time to honor and celebrate his life, but we are struggling to navigate the waves of emotion and uncertainty surrounding his death,” he said.
“However, there is some peace in knowing my father is free.”

In November 2023, Shannon sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an in-depth interview, discussing his father’s concerns.
He pulls no punches, admitting that his younger brother is guilty of parental abuse, imitating his father in communication, using finances and neglecting medical needs.
As both police investigations yielded no evidence, KC confidently responded by denying the claims and announced that he had made a documentary about his father titled America’s father.
Maybe this documentary will answer many questions that fans still have about this family conflict.
