Grey’s Anatomy couple Ben Warren and Miranda Bailey are back working together at Gray Sloan Memorial but not without challenges, according to the stars Jason George.
“She spent the last few years not sleeping about whether Ben would come home,” George, 52, exclusively revealed. Us Weekly ahead of Friday, October 10, episode, referring to the degree of Ben in the Station 19 firehouse. “I don’t think he will be able to end it quickly, so I think there will be friction, (but) there will definitely be some bumps in the road as he remembers how to do these things where he works in the same place.”
Ben (George) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) met at Gray Sloan Memorial when he was an anesthesiologist for general surgeons in the 2010 season 6. After they got together, they switched specialties to surgery and were in the middle of their residency when they found a new passion for fighting fires. After six seasons leading Station 19 spinoff, George which Ben returns to gray‘s season 21 premiere with the intention of completing his residency.
In Thursday’s episode, Ben is interviewed by new residency director Sydney Heron (Rocha River) about returning to the program. Of course, Ben being back at GSM means that he and Bailey will be colleagues again. (At the end of season 20, Bailey was fired by Debbie AllenCatherine Fox for insubordination, but she still runs the reproductive clinic that she started in honor of her late mother and hopes to be re-hired at the hospital.)
“Remember, there’s a recent example at Gray Sloan of doctors who got married and the relationship ended because they didn’t know how to work together,” George teased. us. “It’s fresh in everybody’s mind when they go back and try and remember how to do this thing.”
He added, “They’re home, you know, they have three kids. That part is down, (but) the part of working together, as two professional adults, I have to work on again. They’re not training for it, and it’s going to be television.” that’s fun.
During Ben’s time at Station 19, Bailey is constantly worried about his well-being and whether he will survive the various fires and tragedies. Now he’s back in the hospital, a new problem.
“I think that’s probably the biggest thing he’s going to do in a short period of time because it means he’s used to being the boss at work – he’s always been,” George said. “He’s been a firefighter and he’s been kicking ass and, you know, he’s built a PRT (emergency surgical vehicle), which he’s taken and used in the clinic. So, he’s stopped innovating on his own.
George continued, “He’s used to, very much, defining his own place and being the one who defines it. Now, he has to figure out how to get back because it’s not his place anymore. Catherine makes sure, and he has to go back and know, if he’s got a position again, ‘I will come back here and this is the house, but I must know how to make my house.’
Ben and Bailey relearning how to work together will be their “biggest dance” and “biggest problem” as the season continues, according to George.
“It’s one of those things that he loves, and it’s going to be one of those things that will drive you crazy,” George said. us. “It’s just a gig (and) there’s a lot of comedy and a lot of friction in their relationship.”
While Ben and Bailey navigate new challenges, George Grey’s Anatomy Back is a special homecoming for the actor.
“It’s funny ’cause it’s, like, Ben’s world is mirroring itself ’cause I’m back to it Grey’s Anatomy,” said George. “This is home for me. I’ve been here forever and I’ve never left, but I wasn’t here every day for the last seven years when I did. 19. There are a lot of new faces (and) a lot of people I’ve known forever that I hang out with outside of work. … I think that’s what Ben is going through.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 pm ET.
