Forty-five GOP lawmakers are demanding answers from the Department of Energy (DOE) after a government watchdog group accused the agency of covering up a major study that would undermine one of the Biden-Harris administration’s most aggressive crackdowns on fossil fuels.
The lawmakers wrote to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Thursday to address the watchdog’s accusations that the agency conducted or planned – then quietly buried – a study on the impact of liquefied natural gas (LNG) emissions in 2023 before pausing approval for certain LNG exports. terminal in January on the grounds that the agency needed to conduct such a review. Government Accountability and Oversight (GAO), the watchdog that made the allegations, sued the agency under the public records law to obtain thousands of pages that the DOE admitted could match the GAO’s specific request looking for a 2023 study that the agency allegedly buried because of political production. an inconvenient conclusion, as first reported by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“The effort of the Biden-Harris Administration to hide the findings on the impact of liquefied natural gas is disturbing. Despite the evidence that US LNG benefits both the economy and global energy security, the Department of Energy has imposed an indefinite ban on LNG exports to non-free trade agreement countries without legal justification,” Republic of Texas Rep. August Pfluger, who led the letter, said in a joint statement with DCNF. “The lack of transparency from the DOE regarding the studies that have been conducted, as well as the motivation for the ongoing studies, is unacceptable. The American people deserve to be held accountable for the decision-making process regarding our energy future. If the GAO’s allegations are ultimately proven, the Biden-Harris administration effectively misled the public in an election year to set up policies that undermine America’s geopolitical interests and undermine investment in major energy projects. However, deep-pocketed environmental lobbies aligned with Democrats in the 2024 election cycle are celebrating the policy.
The lawmakers’ letter specifically asked Granholm to clarify whether the agency was conducting an analysis of the emissions impact of LNG exports before the January 26 announcement of a freeze on approvals for LNG export terminals intending to deliver gas to non-free trade agreement (FTA) countries. . Lawmakers also asked Granholm to clarify whether DOE officials or White House personnel have received updates on the analysis, even early, in the first ten months of 2023, as well as whether the agency still intends to publish the findings in January 2025. .
“DOE received this letter and is reviewing it,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement shared with DCNF. “DOE’s process for updating the analysis informing its review of applications to authorize US natural gas exports to non-free trade agreement countries is underway. When the updated analysis is ready, we will publish it for the public to review and comment on.”
Lawmakers gave Granholm until November 8 to respond to the question. Republican Representatives Darrell Issa of California, Dan Crenshaw of Texas, Harriet Hageman of Wyoming, Lance Gooden of Texas and Buddy Carter of Georgia joined Pfluger as signatories, among others.
Notably, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee sent its own letter to Granholm on Wednesday demanding answers on the same issue.
