Ange Postecoglou believes there is more to success as a top-level manager than just winning trophies, with “sustainable success” his aim at Tottenham.
Speaking ahead of Spurs’ trip to Manchester United on Super SundayPostecoglou hinted that Manchester United are an example of why simply winning trophies does not take the pressure off managers.
He said: “If Erik (ten Hag) doesn’t win, then people will say that he should have won. doing a job that doesn’t exist.
“That’s why I always say that I want to build a group that has the opportunity for sustainable success. You need that. Success is not guaranteed but if you build something that gives you the opportunity on a yearly basis you get more opportunities to make time in the club to see yourself itself as a competitor.
“This is part of your existence as a manager. To coin a word: an impossible project, now it becomes even more impossible. It seems that success is not enough if you do not have an identity. Identity then is not enough if it is not followed. by aesthetics is not enough if it is not followed by legacy always has another layer, just like no one does a good job unless they win a competition.
“There seems to be a lack of understanding about progression and the conditions that people need to be in – but that’s the nature of the role. That’s not going to change.”
Ten Hag: Man Utd should win the cup
United made an inconsistent start to the season, losing 3-0 to Liverpool before responding with three clean sheets. Momentum looked to be gathering but they were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Twente at Old Trafford on Wednesday night in the Europa League and the pressure is mounting on Ten Hag, who look set to lose their jobs before winning the FA Cup. .
“We have to win the cup,” said Ten Hag.
“This is what this club means. The highest platform, this club has the ambition to play on the highest platform.
“We want to get the Champions League. That’s clear. We have two routes. One is the Premier League and the other is the Europa League.
“We will be judged every game and that’s normal. Everyone, for every game, expects United to win. We know. It’s not a secret for anyone. When you’re at this club, you have to overcome this factor and we did it. .
“It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old or whatever. We’ve got to get through this. We’ve got to get the best out of it.
“We have to match the expectations. Everyone has them, but we also know, with respect, the young players, the young squad, the new team, that it will take some time. We are going in a good direction in the last few weeks in many aspects of football.
“Now it’s about being more efficient and scoring more goals because that will win the game.”
When asked how he copes with the pressure of work as manager of Manchester United, Ten Hag said: “First of all, respect the criticism. There are a lot of them. You can have an opinion about football. When you’re at work, you have to deal with this. But I don’t can take every criticism into account.
“I don’t read all the criticisms, I can’t even. But I don’t even want to know. I need to know some, and some of the advice is very good.
“For me, it’s staying clinical and seeing where the team is, the areas we need to improve, staying methodical and guiding the team on the right path. Make sure you make the right steps to get the best out of the team.”
