Australia and New Zealand will try to salvage their difficult Rugby Championship campaigns when they meet in the first match of the Bledisloe Cup.
Host Joe Schmidt is reeling after a record defeat in Argentina that has prompted tougher questions about the Wallabies’ state. When boosted by the return of several key figures from injury, the wooden spoon tournament will beckon if the front side is beaten days ahead of the trip to Wellington next week.
The All Blacks, meanwhile, were narrowly squeezed out by the Springboks in their last outing, continuing their run of defeats to South Africa that included last year’s World Cup final. Scott Robertson’s side have been unable to chase the title they have won for the past seven or eight years, and will now focus on retaining the Bledisloe Cup which has existed since 2003.

TRY IT! Australia 7-28 NEW ZEALAND (Ardie Savea, 25 minutes)
Australia is the architect of its own collapse!
A perfect illustration of this meeting so far. Australia rolled out the back three times just inside their own half but the accuracy was lacking, and Hunter Paisami’s pat-on hit the deck. Sevu Reece came over to collect and have a calm waiting for support, which came in the form of horror Ardie Savea. Try number four coming in half an hour.

Australia 7-21 New Zealand, 24 minutes
A 50:22 from flanker Fraser McReight! The Wallabies turned the ball on deck – Taniela Tupou’s jackalling was excellent – and McReight went half old school, “‘ave it!” when he got rid of it. A friendly bounce from the surface skews the kick out of play isnide All Blacks 22, a huge area gain for Australia.
But New Zealand pinch another lineout!

One pass too many! Cortez Ratima snipes to within five meters and flicks it to Scott Barrett, who can be biffed closer to the line but instead tries to pass blindly to Will Jordan. Alas, there was an Australian defender on the way, who could not quite believe his luck as Barrett’s pass landed in his lap.

Australia 7-21 New Zealand, 21 minutes
The worry for Australia is that New Zealand will score every touch. Only the crocodile play of Rieko Ioane, righty penalised, prevented them from charging back into deep Wallabies territory.
Tupou Vaa’i then stole a lineout in the half. Back visitors came in the hunt for a fourth score.

TRY IT! AUSTRALIA 7-21 New Zealand (Fraser McReight, 18 mins)
How Australia needed that!
First chance, first try for the Wallabies, and it worked really well. After realizing that New Zealand had left space at the tail end, a long throw from Matt Faessler found the fading Rob Valetini, who popped into the gap for Nic White. Fraser McReight goes with the scrum half and is on hand to finish the job.

TRY IT! Australia 0-21 NEW ZEALAND (Caleb Clarke, 16 minutes)
And there’s a third try!
Oh, Australia. Initially denying the All Blacks, Harry Wilson flicked a pass towards the elusive Rob Valetini which was easily nipped in by Caleb Clarke. New Zealand build pressure, Will Jordan is again a threat as he roams with menacing intent, and there is room for Clarke to gallop down the left.
There is still quite a bit to do for the wing, but a step from the left and a burly bash into a couple of Australian bodies took him to within reach of the line.

Australia 0-14 New Zealand, 14 minutes
Sevu Reece was twice denied a run to the line on the right, first by Tom Wright’s intelligent leap (and important) tackle, and then through the forward from the tumbling Ardie Savea. The Wallabies feel they have to stay here.

Australia 0-14 New Zealand, 12 minutes
Caleb Clarke may not have kicked in the way he seemed to in the last World Cup cycle, but, injury wise, the Blues winger has had a fantastic summer. He timed the injection better and began to impress as a linking distributor.

TRY IT! Australia 0-14 NEW ZEALAND (Rieko Ioane, 10 minutes)
Too much speed, too much power!
Second score from the All Blacks and another cracker. Caleb Clarke darted through the middle, winged it past a tackler and opened up to Wallace Sititi. Cortez Ratima weaves between the reeling Wallabies and has his pick of three overlapping people – Rieko Ioane the chosen recipient, and the center of the score Test try number 37 untouched.

Australia 0-7 New Zealand, 9 minutes
Boom! Harry Wilson really thundered past Will Jordan in Chase’s kick, rocking the full-back with a picture perfect tackle.
But there is a place to look for the next visitors…
