Members of the Gaudreau family have continued to speak out in the wake of the NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his cousin Matthew Gaudreaudied.
Johnny and Matthew died on the evening of August 29 while riding their bikes in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. Us Weekly can confirm the brothers were struck and killed by 43 years Sean M. Higginswho has been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. Johnny is 31 and Matius is 29.
Higgins, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash, was driving behind two vehicles and was “trying to pass the slower sedan and SUV” when he “entered the southbound travel lane, passed the slower sedan, and attempted to reenter the northbound travel lane ,” New Jersey State Police said us.
“The SUV in front of Higgins moved into the middle of the road, separating the northbound and southbound lanes in order to pass two pedalcyclists who were traveling northbound on the right side of the road,” which is when the accident occurred. Higgins hits Johnny and Matthew “in the back” causing a fatality.

Preliminary Statement
Johnny and his uncle Matthew, Jim Gaudreaureleased a statement to a Boston reporter And Roche on August 30.
“Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons and two brothers-in-law, two nephews, two brothers, two families, two friends, two friends but actually two extraordinary human beings,” he said. “We want to let everyone know that we receive your messages of love and support and thank you for your thoughts and prayers.”
Johnny’s Wife Breaks the Silence
Meredith Gaudreau posted a tribute via Instagram on August 31, remembering her late husband.
“Thank you for the best years of my life. Despite losing you, I am still the luckiest girl in the world to have you,” she wrote. “I love you so much. You were perfect. Some days it feels too good to be true. I love everything about you. You are forever and I can’t wait to be with you again. I love you so much forever.”
The couple, who married in September 2021, have two children: Noa and Johnny Jr. He also praised Johnny’s role as a father in a second post on the same day.
“The best father in the world. So caring and loving. The best partner to go through parenthood with. John did not miss a single appointment,” wrote Meredith. “The best for sleeping baby and Apple from Noa’s eyes. I love how much he looks like a person. We will make you proud. We love you so much daddy.”
Meredith Makes a Promise to the Sisters
Johnny’s wife made a promise to her late husband and late brother-in-law Matthew in a heartfelt Instagram post on August 31.
“John and Matty. You don’t hear one name without the other. Always side by side. Even in a large group setting, you can find yourself hip to hip,” Meredith wrote. “(Matt is) John’s younger brother but (Johnny) looks up to Matty and relies on him for everything. And Matty is always there. Best friends and each other’s biggest fans despite their different personalities.
This is his third honor after the tragedy that killed the brothers, as he will take care of Matthew’s pregnant wife, Madeline.
“Everybody wants to be close to him, including me. I’ll sit and watch John really love his brother,” Meredith said. “Matty, thank you for loving our babies like yours and being such an amazing uncle and godfather. I can’t wait to return the honor when I’m Tripp’s aunt.”

Madeline, who is pregnant with her and Matthew’s first child, also kept quiet about her husband on August 31.
“Dad is the proudest. Matty can’t wait to be a father. He never misses an appointment,” Madeline wrote, referring to her unborn son. “I can’t wait to see you live through our son. … The best 14 years of my life. Can’t wait for more. I miss you so much.”
Madeline and Matthew announced in June that they were ready to welcome a baby boy this December.
Madeline Talks About Her Love
A day after breaking her silence, Madeline got emotional in an Instagram caption on September 1 about her and Matthew’s relationship.
“I have no words. I just miss you. I don’t know my life without you. I’ve never experienced pain like this. I’m so happy you chose me to be your husband.. to love me,” he wrote. “You’re the best thing about me. I know you’re watching it go down as painfully as I’m looking up. I will continue for you and our child. I love you so much matthew.”
Katie Remembers Her Brothers
Johnny and Matthew died the day before his sister Katie’s wedding. He spoke on September 2. (The family also includes Christian’s sister.)
“To know these two you have to love these two,” she wrote. “There are no words to say about my family bond. The whole world knows there would be no John without Matty or Matty without John. The best brother a girl could ask for. This will never be a goodbye post because I will never stop calling names you and respect you both. I’ll take care of mom, dad, Kristen, Mer, Madeline, and your babies.”
Katie’s fiancé respects his siblings
“They say when you find The One, you’re not just married but your family,” Devin Joyce wrote via Instagram on September 2, sharing a photo with his fiancee, Katie, his brothers Johnny and Matthew, and the rest of his family. “I know I never said it, but I love you so much. Fortunately, I have called you two my brothers for as long as I have.”
He told me, “Not a second will go by (if) I don’t see Katie and see you two. I promise to take the best care of my sister, and I know that day you will be with us on that day.

“I never posted this, but John deserves it. 3 years ago today I was yours forever,” he wrote via Instagram on September 4, the day after his death. “One of the best days of my life, including the night we got engaged and the day we brought our baby into the world. The day I met you I remember saying to myself, omg I’m going to marry someone. And every day after that just keeps getting better good and better.I love you forever John and I am proud to be your husband.
