Joker 2, which flopped a lot this year compared to its predecessor, has been labeled ‘the worst movie ever made’ by one of the actors.
The musical’s sequel, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, debuted to mixed reviews at the Venice Film Festival, with reactions slowing as the release date neared – though not universally hated.
However, financially, the box office has been huge compared to the first Joker, which made more than $1 billion when it was released in 2019, but now it is up to £204m, a shortfall of $800m.
American comic Tim Dillon, who had a small role as one of Arkham Asylum’s security guards in the sequel, was happy to tear it down in public as a ‘bad’ movie that was ‘unwatchable’ for entertainment.
Dillon even introduced Joker 2 as ‘the worst movie ever made’ during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast recently.
He indicated that he did not have time to defend the film, written and directed by Todd Phillips, which he ruled had no plot.
The comedian also claimed that he and other actors he worked with slammed the film while it was in the works as ‘c**p’ and predicted it would ‘bomb’.
‘We’ll be sitting there, me and the other guys all in these security suits because we work at Arkham Asylum, and I’ll go to one of them and I’ll hear this c**p and I’ll leave. , “Is this fucking?” And they said, “This is going to bomb, man.” I went, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d say, “What’s the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think I fell in love with him in prison?”,’ he recalled.
Host Rogan suggested that it could be a film that people still like because of its bad reputation, in an ironic way, before it achieved cult status like Paul Verhoeven’s erotic drama Showgirls, released in 1995.
But Dillon shut it down, insisting: ‘This is not even hate-watchable. That’s really bad.’
However, he agrees with the theory that Joker 2 was created to challenge fans who enjoyed the first film, released five years ago.
‘After the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, “Oh, it’s loved by incels. It’s loved by the wrong people and it’s sending the wrong message. Man rage! Nihilism! All these pieces of thinking. And then I thought, “What if we go the other way,” and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing to the point of not being crazy,’ he added.
Dillon also condemned it as ‘the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life’ and ‘a waste of everyone’s time’ if it was made as a protest against the original fans and also because filmmaker Phillips might not want to return. continue.
This is the theory put forward by director Quentin Tarantino, where he claims ‘Joker directs the movie’ in a film with a reported budget that is exciting and Phillips actually says ‘f**k you all’ – Hollywood, fans and shareholders alike.
The 39-year-old also criticized the ‘hubris’ behind the approach, lamenting ‘the idea that you can do it – if people like it so much, they will accept any version of it.
The original Joker grossed more than $1 billion despite a budget of just $55m, prompting Warner Bros to save a production budget for the second that was reported to be around $190m – and that’s before marketing costs, which would have been tens of millions more. taken into consideration.
Joker 2 took just $40m (£30.6m) at the US box office, against a predicted $70m (£53.5m) from a few weeks earlier, and $81.1m (£62m) internationally.
While the original meant a loss of $70m on the production budget, the sequel did even less, finishing at $204m worldwide – which still means it hasn’t recouped all of its costs, and also only 20% of its cost. the first film was made.
Joker: Folie à Deux scored a dismal 32% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes from two professional critics and verified fan reactions alike and has been released to streaming.
It’s available there for UK audiences on November 4th, just a month after its cinematic release, and even earlier – on October 29th – in the US.
Joker: Folie à Deux is available to stream on PVOD platforms including Sky Store, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube and Apple TV now before its release on Blu-ray and DVD on December 16.
