Zayn Malik canceled the first concert, and the entire leg of the tour, which Stairway to the Sky tour following the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
Malik, 31, is scheduled to kick off the tour with a show in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 23. A few days earlier, he confirmed that the show would be postponed.
“Due to the heartbreak I experienced this week, I have made the decision to postpone the US leg Stairway to Sky TourMalik wrote in a statement on Instagram Story Saturday, October 19. “The date has been rescheduled for January and I will post it as soon as everything is set in the next few days.”
He added, “Your tickets remain valid for the new date. Love you all and thank you for your understanding.
Malik announced Stairway to the Sky tour in September, with five stops in the United States and six in the UK between October and December. “Appreciate your patience, love and support,” he wrote via Instagram at the time. “Can’t wait to make good music together. This time I mean really fast 😂 see you in 35 days.”
This is Malik’s first solo tour of his career. The effort, which quickly sold out, following the release of his fourth studio album in May, The Room Under the Stairs.
Malik’s cancellation of the San Francisco show comes after Payne’s tragic death at the age of 31. Us Weekly previously confirmed that Payne died on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
Shortly after the tragedy, the head of Buenos Aires emergency services Alberto Crescenti said that Payne suffered “serious injuries” that could not be treated when first responders arrived on the scene.
“Our job was to rush in, give medical attention and try to resuscitate him, but the injuries are not life-threatening,” Crescenti said, according to The Nation. “Based on what the team saw, there were cranial fractures and very serious injuries that caused him to die instantly.”
Crescenti added, “The team couldn’t do anything. There was no resuscitation because it was confirmed that he was dead. His whole body had very serious injuries.
us confirmed when Buenos Aires City Police officers were dispatched to the CasaSur Palermo Hotel following a 911 call about an aggressive man believed to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. An investigation was launched by local law enforcement after the incident.
Payne and Malik join forces Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson in the UK edition of The X factor in 2010 to form One Direction. The boyband rose to fame, releasing five studio albums between 2011 and 2015. Malik left the group in 2015, and the remaining members in 2016. Each man pursued a solo career, with Payne releasing his first album, LP1in 2019.
Malik reflected on his exit from the band in 2023, revealing on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that he “selfishly wanted to be the first person to make his own record.”
