Alex De Minaur has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon ahead of his quarter-final with Novak Djokovic due to injury.
De Minaur, the girlfriend of British No. 1 Katie Boulter, suffered the same problem late in his fourth-round win over Arthur Fils on Monday. The ninth seed overcame his fears despite shaking his head towards the box on Court One, but shortly after noon on the day of his scheduled Center Court match with Djokovic, De Minaur withdrew from the Championship.
“Obviously it’s not the kind of announcement I want,” De Minaur said. “Yes, I was broken but had to withdraw because of a hip injury. I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against the Fils and got a scan yesterday. It got worse when I walked on the court.
Djokovic’s return to Wimbledon was eagerly anticipated after he criticized the Center Court crowd after his previous match. He attacked the crowd for supposedly booing during his victory over Holger Rune and tennis legend John McEnroe later supported the Serbian position.
Another men’s singles quarter-final sees Taylor Fritz face Lorenzo Musetti on Court 1, while the women’s singles quarter-final sees 2022 champion Elena Rybakina face Ukrainian star Elina Svitolina and two former French Open champions Jelena Ostapenko take on Barbora Krejcikova.

Alex de Minaur withdrew from Wimbledon before his quarter-final against Novak Djokovic
The Australian No. 1, enjoying the best season of his career, suffered the injury on match point against Arthur Fils in his fourth-round match on Monday.
De Minaur’s persona changed immediately and despite suffering a hip injury at the press conference, his resignation was confirmed on Wednesday lunchtime.
So seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic gets a walkover to Friday’s semi-finals, where he will play either Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti.

Wimbledon 2024: Latest scores
A break early serve on Court 1 as Barbora Krejcikova won the second service game from Jelena Ostapenko to take a 2-1 lead. Can he consolidate with custody?
Krejcikova won the 2018 French Open out of nowhere and has never advanced past the quarterfinals of another grand slam. It was also the first quarter-final at Wimbledon.

Another of De Minaur’s retreats
Here’s what Alex de Minaur had to say about the resignation:
“Obviously it’s not the kind of announcement I want. Yes, I’m excited but I had to withdraw because of a hip injury.
“I felt a loud crack during the last three points of the match against Fils and I got a scan yesterday. It confirmed this injury and with a high risk of making it worse if I step on the court. It’s no secret that at this stage of my career, it’s the biggest match from career.
“I know the result yesterday but I hope I will wake up today and feel the miracle.
“The problem with me going out and playing is that one stretch, one slide, one can cause this injury from three to six weeks to four months.”

Alex De Minaur is happy to take on the role of Wimbledon’s honorary Englishman
Alex De Minaur is delighted to be an honorary Briton for the rest of the tournament after reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time.
The Australian ninth seed defeated Arthur Fils on Court One in the fourth round and had plenty of support from the box, which included long-term girlfriend and British No.1 Katie Boulter.
De Minaur hopes the tie means she will receive the support of the crowd at SW19 after Emma Raducanu’s defeat on Sunday ended her country’s participation in the singles series.
“Oh, 100 percent. I will take all the support I can get. I can be an honorary Englishman at Wimbledon,” said De Minaur. “I really love it there, I have to say. I always love coming to Wimbledon and playing here. I always feel like I play some of my best tennis.
“Over the years, I think the support I’ve given has grown. It’s great as a player to know you have a lot of people in the stadium supporting you, having your back when you’re away from home.
“Yes, over the years I have learned more about English culture because of Katie.”
