A reader tries to predict everything about the next Nintendo console, from the name and special features to the launch line-up.
Rumors and speculations about the Switch’s successor seem to be increasing. The logic will stay close to the winning Switch formula but knowing Nintendo you probably have a console that you play with your feet and the games go straight to your brain while you sleep. Regardless, I’m going to make a bold prediction and we’ll see how right or wrong it is (hopefully) in a few months.
Console name
Predicting console names isn’t easy because of the strange names Nintendo games have had over the years and maybe the next Switch won’t have the word ‘Switch’ in the name and will be called the Nintendo Wonder Machine or something. both are excited. Also, the Super Switch could be a competitor or maybe the Switch Pro or Switch X. However, given the failure of the Wii U, I imagine Nintendo wants to avoid confusion. Therefore, my prediction is only Nintendo Switch 2.
Console features
My prediction for the console is that in terms of power it will be somewhere between the last generation and the current generation. For example, the PlayStation 4.5, if you will, and it can be compared to the current wave of PC handhelds such as the ROG Ally.
I think it will have an LCD screen but it will be a mid-generation OLED upgrade. It will, I think, be compatible with current consoles. I also who will not stray too far from the Switch now and will console Sato with the updated Joy-Con controller.
As with most Nintendo games, there’s usually some kind of unique selling point, someone in the game’s Inbox is possibly augmented reality (AR) and I like the idea. So that’s my prediction. The dual-screen hybrid console is similar to the Nintendo DS, albeit larger, with two eight-inch screens, one with AR capabilities.
I will be able to remove the screen from each other and both screens can have Joy-Cons attached. Therefore, this creates another unique selling point that can effectively play two-player split-screen games locally on two different screens with one console.
I think it will be launched in late March 2025 and announced early to mid November this year. I think it will retail for £389.99.
title Open
Zelda
The Switch launched with Breath Of The Wild but the chances of a new Zelda game are less than the chances of it snowing in Hell. However, there are rumors of a Breath Of The Wild remaster running on upgraded hardware. I can’t see how the Breath Of The Wild remake would be worth buying at full price, given how recently it was released.
However, given Nintendo’s recent history of releasing full-price remasters without significant additional features, this may be the case. This may be wishful thinking but since the remaster of The Wind Waker is often mentioned, I would predict a Zelda All-Stars type release with Breath Of The Wild, The Wind Waker, and a no-frills version of Ocarina Of Time. now available in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. Another outside shout is for DLC to be released for Tears Of The Kingdom, exclusive to the new console.
Mario
It’s been almost seven years since the last Mario 3D and even longer since the last Mario Kart. Therefore the new Mario will be a good guess for the launch game. Mario Kart has the bigger sales numbers, so I’m going to go out on a limb and say Nintendo will save it for a Xmas release to boost sales. Therefore, my prediction is that the new Mario 3D exclusive to the new Switch will be released and Mario Kart 9 will be released in November 2025 and will be a cross-generational title.
I will go further out in the branch and say the Mario game will be set in space like Super Mario Galaxy and feature several different worlds which will be semi-open worlds like Odyssey. I’m going to predict it will be called Super Mario Infinity. That will definitely go a long way. I think the game will use the password of the predicted dual screen, so that in certain parts of the game you can control Mario with one screen and perhaps other characters such as Luigi or Yoshi with the other to solve the puzzle. I also think that if the console has an SSD drive it will utilize this in some way.
Another Nintendo IP
Rumors of a Donkey Kong game have been around for a while now. And while I can’t see a Mario platformer and a Donkey Kong platformer being released together, I would predict a Donkey Kong themed strategy or puzzle type game in the vein of the new Mario Vs. Donkey Kong remake or Mario + Rabbids game. (The rumor is more than a Donkey Kong game is New Mario game – GC)
I also think, like many others, that the upcoming Metroid Prime 4 game will be a cross-generational release.
I will also predict some type of party type games that use the new features of the console, perhaps in the style of Wii Sports or 1-2-Switch, which will present some different Nintendo characters.
third party games
Nintendo has collaborated with Ubisoft several times with the Rabbids game and since the new console will be more powerful, I predict that the latest Assassin’s Creed game will be released together with the console and whenever Far Cry 7 is released it will also be released on the Switch 2.
My big prediction is that the Elden Ring edition, including the new language game and DLC, will be the launch game. Dark Souls has previously been released for Switch and Elden Ring has been one of the most successful games in recent years, so it will be a big draw. Especially since I imagine even those who have played the game before will be tempted to buy the game again for the ability to play it in portable mode.
Another outside bet is the possibility of GTA 5 and/or Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar has collaborated with Nintendo in the past, with Chinatown Wars, and it makes sense for one or two games to be announced as both will be likely. new hardware capabilities. The only unfortunate thing is that GTA 5 is one of those games that you’ve been hoping has been ported to the Switch by now, and if it’s going to happen, it probably already has. now.
Game price
Current trends will dictate that the new standard price is £69.99 or higher to bring Nintendo in line with Xbox and PlayStation. However, Xbox has Game Pass and PlayStation and Xbox games will have significant discounts for the first year or so of release, while Nintendo games are full price for their full lifetime.
Therefore, I hope that the new price for the game will be £59.99 by default. Another option is the digital-only console and the game remains at the usual price of £49.99. I’m not a massive fan of the idea of a digital-only console for the most part, but if it means that the costs were kept down then I can get on board.
So, there you are. Hopefully it won’t be long until we get concrete news about the new console and we’ll find out how right (or more likely) I was.
