The Latin American left is in turmoil. Consider these three data points from the last few days:
First, Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the eve of the BRICS Summit, announced that he will not participate in the November G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – as you can read in Putin To Sit out Next Month’s Rio G-20 Meeting ‘ Not So Bullying’.
Putin has an ‘arrest warrant’ against him issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is a supranational court that is not recognized by the US or Russia or China.
Brazil, as a small-minded regional power, is part of the ICC, and while President Lula da Silva is a close ally of Putin, he refuses to pay the political price of ignoring the ‘court’.
In Putin’s announcement there was some criticism for Lula, when he said that a bilateral agreement could have been reached to circumvent the ICC.
The second data point is that, immediately after Putin’s announcement, Lula da Silva suffered a ‘domestic accident’ and was advised by doctors not to fly to Kazan, Russia for the BRICS Summit.
In Brazil, rumors started that Lula would lie or exaggerate the issue to avoid angering Putin by basically not being invited to the G20.
So Brazil was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and played a minor role in events dominated by Russia, China and India – until it emerged that Brazil had vetoed the entry into the BRICS group of Venezuela and Nicaragua.
(One for the falsification of the Presidential election, the other for the persecution of Catholic Priests in the country)
It was a shocking event that divided the Latin American left network in a big way.

So now, in the third data point to consider, we have the highest level officials in Venezuela furiously spreading the same rumor about Lula’s ‘accident’.
While he did not provide evidence, the General Prosecutor of the Ministry of Public Affairs of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, said yesterday (26) that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ‘faked’ a head injury before the Kazan summit to escape the consequences of vetoing his entry. of Nicolás Maduro’s government in the BRICS group.
Saab, who about a month ago accused Lula da Silva of being a CIA agent, and said the Brazilian president ‘must be investigated’.
CNN Brazil reports (translated from Portuguese):
“‘Direct sources close to Brazil told me that President Lula da Silva falsified the alleged accident to use him as an alibi to avoid participating in the new BRICS Summit’, wrote the general (Prosecutor), in a text signed by him, on the account of the Prosecutor’s Office Common in social networks.
Saab said the ‘accident’ that prevented Lula from traveling was a lie to avoid ‘his responsibility to President Putin, other current presidents and, above all, President Maduro’.
The public prosecutor showed a video of the first public appearance by Lula in which he showed the officer a wound on his head.
“But for Saab, Lula ‘reappeared smiling and unharmed, explaining that he used the ‘accident’ to deceive Brazil, the BRICS and the whole world, a fact that must be investigated.”
So the rumor got a shot in the arm with the words of a Venezuelan official.
“The general (prosecutor) also said that there is a ‘great malaise on the left of Latin America’ due to what he described as the ‘reckless and disrespectful performance’ of the Brazilian government in ‘vetoing and cowardly attacking Venezuela’. Saab accused Lula of following ‘with the way of obeying the instructions of the historical enemy’ of the Venezuelan people.
For Russian President Vladimir Putin, he stated at the last BRICS-Summit press conference, commenting on Brasilia’s rejection of the results of the July presidential election in Venezuela and the subsequent vote against participation in the BRICS group.
Sputnik International reports:
“‘We know Brazil’s attitude. Our position is not the same as Brazil’s on matters (related to) Venezuela. I speak openly. We talked about this on the phone yesterday with the president of Brazil. I have a good relationship and I trust (with him) .Venezuela is fighting for independence – for sovereignty, Putin said.
