The University stars at the 2024 International Astronautical Congress in Milan
The Politecnico di Torino proved its important role in the aerospace and aeronautical research landscape with a solid presence at the IAC conference, October 14-18.
The stage of the IAC Astronaut Chapter will be held on Tuesday, October 15, at 3 pm in Politecnico’s Aula Magna, Corso Duca degli Abruzzi 24, when a delegation of ten ESA and NASA astronauts will visit the PoliTO space and meet with students.

TURIN, Italy, October 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Ing International Astronautical Congress (IAC) is the main event in the calendar of scientists and experts in the field of astronautics around the world, gathering every year the most advanced fields of science, technology and industry for a week with meetings, workshops and technical-scientific sessions.
Politecnico in Torinodriving force for research on space issues and promoter of the “Aerospace City” project in Turin, playing a leading role in the 75th edition of the IAC, which will be held on October 14-18 in Milan (at MiCo. Milano Convention Center), with the strong commitment of faculty and the presence of the University’s excellence in this strategic and rapidly developing domain.
IAC, which returned to Italy after 12 years, is organized by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) with the support of Italian Aeronautics and Astronautics Association (AIDAA) in collaboration with Italian Space Agency (ASI) and Leonardo.
The motto of this year’s edition, “Responsible Space for Sustainability” summarizes the commitment of the Politecnico di Torino and the organizers of the IAC: working in synergy with all stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions for space exploration and exploitation of its future, but also make a responsible use of current Earth observation technology to address issues related to climate change and improve life on the planet.

Politecnico will be represented at the IAC by conference chairman, Professor Erasmo Carrera from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering-DIMEAS, as the president of AIDAA. Professor Enrico Zappino, Executive Project Director from IAC 2024and Professor Alfonso Pagani, Co-chair of the International Program Committeewill also participate.
More than 170 faculty members and researchers will now, with over 320 scientific contributions in a program that includes about 4200 accepted papers. In the conference program on aerospace research, Politecnico di Torino will bring experience in satellite research and development, earth observation and telecommunicationsjoin key plenary discussions among academic, scientific and industrial stakeholders and policy makers: more than 50 ministers and members of parliament from many European countries and from all over the world will indeed be present at the IACas well as representatives of European Union and on United Nations.
Politecnico will be there in over 20 thousand square meters of IAC’s exhibition section with a large boothin which he will show research activities about 30 Interdepartmental Centers and research groups, 10 patents and Proof of Concept projects in aerospaceat spin-off (startups born from Politecnico di Torino research group) Deplotic, Evolunar, Oris, Mespac and SpaceMotionery. More than 10 startups are included in the ESA BIC Turina The European Space Agency’s incubation program is managed by the I3P Politecnico incubatorwill also participate with scientific and technological support from PoliTO and LINKS Foundation. Politecnico will even provide it a place where companies can meet with researchers to achieve important collaborative projects.

PoliTO will present space-related activities funded under PNRR-Next Generation EU. The university is actually now leading the way NODES – North West Digital and Sustainable Innovation Ecosystem, which participates in the flagship project SPACE4YOUwhich aims to create a distributed laboratory to support the development of technologies and solutions for space exploration and new space applications. Also coordinates Spoke 1 – Air Mobility National Center for Sustainable Mobility – MOSTfor the future of air mobility. Besides that, it is lead the Space It Up! project, funded by ASI and the Ministry of Universities and Research, with a purpose combining Italian expertise in space science and engineeringplacing Italy at the forefront of research in Earth observation and protection, extraterrestrial exploration, artificial satellites and remote sensing. Space It Up! will have its own dedicated booth and many related activities.
Future space scientists will also be the stars of the IAC: A team of PoliTO students involved in aerospace will display the prototype on a special stand. They are: ASTRA, CubeSat, DIANA, PoliTo Rocket, PoliTorbital and Icarus. In addition, more than 50 Polytechnic students will attend the conference as volunteersa unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of IAC and meet aerospace experts.

Tuesday, October 15, at 3 pm, Aula Magna of the Politecnico di Torino (Corso Duca degli Abruzzi 24) will host a delegation of ESA and NASA astronauts who, as part of IAC Astronaut Chapterwill travel from the congress to the city of Turin, to visit excellence aerospace and meet Politecnico students during the event where they will talk about their experiences as scientists and space explorers. Here is the line-up of the astronauts: Paolo Nespoli, Luca Parmitano, Tony Antonelli, Tuva Atasever, Anthea Comellini, Alvin Drew, Reinhold Ewald, Akihiko Hoshide, Andrea Patassa and Carmen Possnig.
