1. Angela Simmons Responds to Mixed Reaction Over Purse Gun
Just like the red carpet, celebrities’ style choices for this year’s BET Awards are a topic of conversation. Ice Spice turn heads with her bright orange Marilyn Monroe-esque bob and curving-hugging Versace. Lil Mo it’s dripping in a purple corset paired with purple peep-toe shorts, knee-high purple boots, and a matching captain’s hat. Johnny Blaze had her abs on full display with her all-white floral bra and maxi skirt set.
But Angela Simmons certainly attracted attention when she chose a green, bejeweled, gun-shaped bag to pair with her curve-hugging, Casze Atelier peacock-inspired dress.
Reactions to Simmons’ accessories were all over the place. Some people pointed to her closeness to gun violence-related deaths, including her son’s father, while others pointed to men. You have to as an influence. They didn’t walk the carpet together, but sat next to each other at the BET Awards 2024. And then, of course, there memes and trolling from style selection.

After the event, Angela Simmons broke her silence in a controversial appearance while riding in a car. He admitted that he was “not like that, never like that” and was not violent.
“…I’ve been through a lot in my personal life when it comes to gun violence and it’s personal to me, but I love the bag. And I thought it was cool, and I thought it was a fashion moment. It is,” he said. “I don’t intend to ruffle anyone’s feathers.”

2. Taraji P. Henson’s ‘Not Like Us’ Parody Intro For 2024 BET Awards
Moving from the red carpet, Taraji P. Henson show her audience before teasing her hidden talent to open the show. Henson took to the mic in a red hoodie and jeans, mimicking Kendrick Lamar’s look from his viral Juneteenth concert.

Taraji puts it on her hit track ‘Not Like Us,’ choosing to focus on the pay gap in Hollywood, among other topics.
3. Usher’s Lifetime Achievement Speech & Tribute
Usher is one of the highlights of this year’s BET Awards as the previously announced recipient of the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award. That evening, he won the BET Award for “Best Male Pop Artist” among nominees Chris Brown, Brent Faiyaz, Bruna Boy, Drake, Fridayy, and October London.
When he took the stage to accept the Lifetime Achievement Award, he remained 100 about his 30-year entertainment career. Not withholding extra sauce from a couple of cuss words, Usher thanked him who ‘d look out for him. Unfortunately, the network muted many of the speeches-probably because of cussing-, but he brought friends like Jermaine Dupri, LA Reid, and Bryan Michael Cox on stage.
Later in the speech, he also talked about forgiving people who had negative things about him. Usher then proceeded to drop his ex-husband’s name, Tameka Foster, and talk about co-parenting using Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz co-parenting with their ex-husbands as examples.
“I tried Tameka,” Usher added as his newlywed wife, Jennifer Goicoechea, sat in the front row.
4. These Artists Are Nominated For Usher Awards
As we all know, along with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, Usher gets the chance to see his peers honoring his legacy. Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) opened with an a capella version of his 2001 hit, ‘U Don’t Have To Call,’ and Keke Palmer joined in as the music started, then transitioned into ‘U Make Me Wanna.’
Coco Jones eating up ‘There Goes My Baby,’ even pulling Usher out of the crowd at that point. Marsha Ambrose come through with ‘Superstar,’ ChloeMic ‘s ON for ‘Good Kisser’ when Tina bodied ‘Nice & Slow.’

5. Donald Glover threw shade, Call out who is tied with Sam Smith For BET Awards
While Glover took the stage to honor Usher, he also used the show’s spotlight to mention the BET Awards. They covered BET when they presented Killer Mike with Album of the Year. Although he was nominated for Best Actor, Denzel Washington ended up receiving the award.
He admits that his career deserves more BET awards. “How much more entertainment do I have to do? Because this is just the math of reality,” Glover said.
“I have more Grammys than Will Smith, which makes no sense, but I have the same BET award as Sam Smith. Does that make sense to you? Sam Smith and I are neck and neck at the Black Entertainment Television (Awards),” he said.
For context, Donald Glover won the 2019 BET Award for his music video for the song ‘This Is America.’ Sam Smith also has one BET Award from 2015 for ‘Best New Artist.’
Glover, formerly of Childish Gambino, finished with dark humor, adding, “If I have to do ‘Baby Boy’ or something, let me know. I’ll have Jonathan Majors put me in a headlock, shave my head, I’ll do it.
