‘Superman’: Cast, First Look, Release Date and Everything We Know About James Gunn’s New DC Movie

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a new take on it Superman!

Writer-director James Gunawan took on a classic comic book hero for his first feature film as co-head of DC Studios.

When Gunn and co-head Peter Safran announced plans for the new DC Universe, starting with the Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate, Safran described taking updates in Clark Kent / Superman. While it is not the origin story, the film – originally announced as Superman: Legacy — will focus on characters “balancing their Kryptonian heritage with their human upbringing.”

“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that considers kindness as old-fashioned,” added the producer.

The Politician David Corenswet take on the cape Superman as the Man of Steel, aka Clark Kent, with Mrs. Maisel is amazing star Rachel Brosnan as Lois Lane’s.

The star-studded cast also features Milly Alcock, Isabella Merced, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Wendell Pierce, Beck Bennett and others.

David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman

Corenswet will play the 25-year-old version of the Kryptonian hero, who lives a double life as Clark Kent, a young reporter for Planet every day newspaper.

In announcing the project, Safran described the Corenswet version of Superman as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way; he is good in a world that thinks good is the old way.”

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane

Mrs. Maisel is amazing star will play the love interest of Superman and his colleague Clark Kent Planet every day.

ET spoke with Brosnahan at the Critics Choice Awards in January 2024, and while he couldn’t share many details about the film, he offered three words to describe his iconic version of the character.

“Feisty, outspoken, beautiful, and very intelligent,” the actress said.

Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl

At Dragon House alum will make his first screen appearance as Superman’s brother/hero in Superman, before taking the lead himself. Supergirl movie, set for a June 2026 release.

Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl

Making perhaps the fastest hop from Marvel to DC, the Miss Web star will star as the winged superhero, who has made small appearances on various DC sites throughout the year, including the CW’s Arrow-verse. It has not been announced whether Hawkgirl Merced will play Superman.

Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor

After appearing in four X-Men film as Henry “Hank” McCoy / Beast, Hoult returns to the superhero genre as the main antagonist of Superman, with Gunn promised take the British actor in the character will be “Lex that will be different from anything that has been seen before and will not be forgotten.”

“I couldn’t be happier,” Gunn said at the time confirm the news in January 2024. “Here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my favorite characters in the DCU. 🙌🧬🔬⚗️.”

Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern

A casting favorite throughout Gunn’s career, A new person star will actually ask to show your face (and, hopefully, to have all the body parts attached) at Superman, portraying members of the Green Lantern Corps. Guy Gardner is a different iteration of the galactic peacekeeper than Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan from 2011. Green Lantern — the character is canonically known for being violent and shaped by being raised violently.

Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho

After playing a DC villain Victor Zsasz in Gotham, the Barry star has said happily to match up as the hero Superman. In the comics canon, the character is an adventurer and archeologist who, after exposure to a radioactive meteorite, gains the ability to change and transform himself into any element of the human body.

Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen

PLOT

The film is set to be the first one below The new DCUled by Gunn and Safran, and the first film in planning Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate.

Very little is known about the plot, but Gunn revealed that it won’t be an origin story, but will instead explore the divide between Superman’s Kryptonian heritage and his Earthly upbringing in Kansas. He also points out that Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent is about 25 years old in the film – making him look much older than Tom Welling high school version of the character Smallvillebut younger than Henry Cavill’s version of the DCEU.

Gunn has also indicated that the film “very inspiring” in 2005-08 All-Star Superman comic run by Grant Morrison and Frank Enough. The 12-issue series sees Superman die from exposure to radiation from the sun and push himself to complete “Superman’s Twelve Labors” – a heroic feat that helps humanity and Kryptonians.

Gunn shared the first look at Corenswet in his Superman suit in May 2024, showing off a superhero-style shot of him wearing boots as chaos lights up the skies of Metropolis outside his window.

PRODUCTION AND RELEASE DATE

Fillion told ET in February 2024 the cast holds the first table read later in the month. Filming begins on February 29, 2024, with one week on location in Svalbard, Norway, which Gunn chose as the location for Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.

Moving stateside, filming continued on Georgia and Ohioand expected until August 2024.

The film is set to release in theaters on July 11, 2025.
