South Africa defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 273 runs in three days and swept the two-Test series on Thursday.
Bangladesh lost 16 wickets on the third day and lost for the second time, after an innings and 310 loss against the West Indies in 2002.
In response to South Africa’s declared 575-6, Bangladesh were all out for 159 just after lunch, forced to chase, and bowled out again for 143 in 44 overs.
Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took 5-37 in the first innings and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj 5-59 in the second innings.
South Africa won the first Test by seven wickets for their first victory on the subcontinent since 2014.
Resuming the day at 38-4, Bangladesh were reduced to 48-8 with Rabada getting his 15th in five Tests.
A 103 ninth wicket partnership between Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam delayed the inevitable. Mominul made a team best 82 and Taijul 30.
Leading by 416 runs in the first innings, South Africa implemented a follow-on and its bowlers justified the decision by wrapping up Bangladesh in less than two sessions.
Left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy registered a career-best 4-45 in the fourth test to play the perfect foil for Maharaj.
No 10 batsman Hasan Mahmud 38 not out and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 36. But Bangladesh batsman’s injudicious shot led to collapse.
After discussing Rabada (7-1-17-0) with some luck in the second half, Bangladesh crumbled against the play.
Rabada’s new ball partner, Dane Paterson, struck first as Shadman Islam chased a delivery outside off the back in the six. He was also dismissed in the first innings for the ducks. Then, Muthusamy got the outside edge of another opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 11.
Mominul Haque fought in the first innings for 82, but came to bat for the second time in less than 30 minutes, he was removed for a duck when trying to dominate Maharaj.
Muthusamy extended Mushfiqur Rahim’s slim patch by catching him leg before on two and after his epic 191 against Pakistan in August, Mushfiqur Rahim has gone 10 innings without a half-century.
Shanto counterattacked but Muthusamy and Maharaj kept chipping away with wickets to leave Bangladesh in danger all out for less than 100. It was then that Muthusamy baffled Shanto with a delivery that spun too much to take on the inside edge.
Debutant Mahidul Islam scored 29 and Hasan Mahmud played some big shots to help Bangladesh past 100 but Maharaj dismissed Mahidul and Nahid Rana in quick succession to complete the 10th Test for five and complete Bangladesh’s lead.
