Here’s an automated transcript of today’s episode:
Hi, I’m Rochelle Travers, and this is The Standard’s Tech and Science Daily podcast.
Come on, how can you speed up the concept of time.
Samsung’s latest Unpacked event has taken place, and with it a new series of Galaxy AI-powered products has been unveiled, including the launch of the all-new wearable Galaxy Ring.
The passive assist tracker for your finger will collect data to give you an overall energy score, sleep score, as well as personalized health tips based on your health goals.
Interestingly, you’ll be able to perform a double-pinch swipe to remotely take a photo and snooze or stop an alarm.
And just like a smartwatch, you’ll get an inactivity alert if you’ve been sitting for too long.
Two new foldable phones were also revealed, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6, as well as a new extreme sports-focused Galaxy Watch Ultra to rival the Apple Watch Ultra.
Now, ever fancy trying to wind up the clock?
Research has found that looking forward to Christmas or Ramadan can speed up your sense of time.
We found that more than 70% of people in the UK and Iraq feel like annual events such as Christmas and Ramadan come sooner every year.
So people feel like the event is happening faster than they imagined, even though they know it happens every year.
It’s Ruth Ogden, professor of psychology at Liverpool John Moores University and lead author of the study.
They conducted a survey of more than 1,600 adults in the UK and Iraq, where they asked the participants about their memory function, how they like Christmas and or Ramadan, how they think about time and information about their daily life.
What we found is that people are more likely to feel that time is speeding up towards Christmas and Ramadan if they are really looking forward to the event, if they think about the time a lot, but interestingly, if they have a bad memory function, especially the inability or reduced ability to plan future events.
So people struggle to remember what to do in the future, just like Christmas comes sooner every year.
Although the research focused on big calendar dates like Christmas and Ramadan, Professor Ogden said it could also apply to smaller events, such as going out for dinner or meeting friends.
It can also help you draw conclusions about what it means when something negative happens.
You think about negative events in your life.
For example, a good example is when you are waiting for the results of a medical test at the hospital, or you are waiting for the doctor to call you back, or you are waiting for a scan.
The time between you knowing you have to have this test and getting the results, really drags on, slowly.
We think this happens because you’re too stressed, but also because you’re just focused on taking in the information.
So, it really interferes with what you do with your life.
You don’t do the normal things you would do to distract yourself from time.
And that really slows how we experience time.
Professor Ogden says there are things you can do if you want to feel more in control of your time.
So, when we lose our routine, we feel like we are losing time.
So, sticking to a schedule, keeping track of what you have to do and when you have to do it is a great way to keep yourself on time.
The worst time is when we feel extreme emotions that will sound like the idea of time slowing down in a car accident.
Everyday life is full of stress and tension.
So, try to stay calm, try to see things in perspective will help time to stop whacking and waning.
So, I think one of the most important things to remember from the study is that people who struggle to remember what to do in future events are more likely to feel that time is passing by quickly.
So, if you want to experience a slower and calmer time, you need to be aware of the planning that needs to be done and you need to stay on top of the tasks that are required for the upcoming events.
The findings were published in the Journal Plos One.
A new study shows that night owls have superior brain function than morning people.
What we already know about this topic is that we know that the quality of sleep can affect your cognitive ability and we know that short or long sleep duration can damage your cognitive function.
That is Dr. Raha West, Clinical Researcher at Imperial College London and Lead Author of the study.
But what we don’t know is whether your biological clock, called chronotype, whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, has anything to do with how you perform on cognitive tests.
The team examined data on thousands of people from the UK Biobank study to examine the complex relationship between sleep duration, quality and chronotype, categorized in the study as morningness, eveningness or intermediate.
Participants undergo tests that examine intelligence, reasoning skills, reaction time and memory.
Researchers analyzed data on nearly 27,000 people, comparing how the test performed with self-reported sleep duration, sleep patterns and sleep quality.
In the population we studied, we found that people of the evening type appeared to perform better in cognitive tests.
But I must emphasize that our study involves older adults because the data set includes participants aged 40 and above and the average age is around 71, 72.
Those who slept between seven and nine hours a night appeared to do best in the test.
And academics have also found that night owls and those classified as intermediate have superior cognitive function.
However, Dr. Raha is keen to emphasize that these findings do not mean that anyone should try to alter their natural sleep patterns.
While we found evening types to be better in these tests, our findings are more association than causation.
I think everyone should aim for the right amount of sleep, good quality sleep, not too short, not too long, but also to identify the peak cognitive time and take advantage of it.
Here comes an alien habitable planet and Microsoft raises the price of Xbox Game Pass.
NASA scientists have discovered a super icy earth that could be home to alien life.
A new study of the planet known as LHS 1140b has shown that it may have an atmosphere and possibly liquid water, making it one of the more promising places to find life.
LHS 1140b orbits a low-mass red dwarf star about one-fifth the size of our own sun.
Scientists are excited because they believe they may be in the Goldilocks zone, which is neither too close nor too far from their star, meaning liquid water might exist.
And finally, bad news for gamers, Microsoft is raising the price of Xbox Game Pass by 25%.
The game giant, which bought the studio Activision Blizzard for a record $69 billion in 2023, said that the monthly fee for PC Game Pass will increase by two pounds to nine pounds 99, while the premium service, Ultimate, will rise by two pounds to 14 pounds 99. per month.
It also changed the standard subscription level on Xbox consoles in September, meaning Xbox players must now subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate if they want to access new games when they’re released.
It comes after Microsoft announced its highly anticipated new title, Call of Duty Black Ops 6, will be available immediately to Game Pass subscribers.
