Getting a bargain at the supermarket is always important especially when it comes to buying meat.
But a savvy Sainsbury’s shopper has divided opinion on social media after buying nine lipsticks worth £252 at a yellow sticker price of just £36.
Yes you read that right £36.
A picture was posted on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group and shows a large pack of meat on a trolley next to a pot of olives and fresh mint.
Alwyn Smith shared the caption: ‘Mate got a good deal at Sainsburys today.’
But the picture sparked a social media storm from some other members of the group.
People are questioning why the man bought the nine-legged sheep, with some even accusing him of being ‘greedy’ amid the cost of living crisis.
Best time to get ‘yellow sticker’ supermarket deals
Finance blogger Fiona Hawkes – who has written extensively about yellow sticker shopping – told Metro.co.uk that usually the best deals can be found in the evening, from 7pm.
If you want a more precise time for each supermarket, here is a guide to follow:
- Aldi – 8am (when the shop opens)
- Asda – 7pm onwards
- Lidl – 8am (when the shop opens)
- M&S– 30 minutes before the store closes
- Morrisons – 6pm onwards
- Tesco – 6pm onwards
- Sainsbury’s – 6pm onwards
Please note that timings may vary across all branches.
Maria Jones wrote: ‘Ever heard of being polite to others?! The cost of living crisis affects everyone.’
Jeanette Fairweather complained: ‘No wonder there are left when I’ve been to my local Sainsbury’s.’
Other shoppers like Sherrie Comer have a similar strategy, buying in bulk and then storing the meat in the freezer.
He said: ‘I have six in the freezer and no, I don’t take them all for a few days and every time there are more than 20 legs there.’
But not everyone is against shoppers saving money.
Fay Nicholas defended them and said: ‘I thank you for buying and using!
‘I think it’s really sad that these animals die for no reason if they just go in the bin!’
Shoppers like Danny B saw the funny side and joked: ‘Do you run a soup kitchen or do you have Narnia in your wardrobe to store all this meat?’
With prices of some household staples nearly tripling in two years, stockpiling can only be expected in some households.
According to Statista, the inflation rate for food prices in the UK was measured at 10.1% in October this year.
This has caused consumers to change their shopping behavior, even changing supermarkets depending on discounts.
After tracking 21,000 products across eight major brands over the past two years, consumer watchdog Which? found that one of the worst examples of price inflation Mr. Kipling Bakewell Cake Slices x6 in Sainsbury’s, which swelled in price by 175%, from £1 to £2.75.
If you’re in the market for bargains, or even freebies, keep your eyes peeled and check your receipts when shopping at Tesco.
