Don’t you love the exciting and unpredictable Oscar race this year? Effectively, you have to be the result of Ridley Scott’s epic and possibly huge blockbuster sequel, “Gladiator II,” has exploded on the scene after the first screening in Los Angeles at the entrance of the AMPAS and SAG voters.
The long-awaited sequel to best picture winner “Gladiator” (2000) inspired Scott, a three-time Oscar-nominated director, to win his long-awaited Academy Award. In addition, stars Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington are now competing in their respective races.
After choosing the first best actor Oscar nomination for “Aftersun” (2022), Mescal can find himself again in the class for the main position of “Gladiator II”. In the meantime, Washington, who already has two Oscars performing, can find himself in the competition for the 3rd, possibly becoming a member of the small record of winners performing three times, along with Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson, and Daniel Day-Lewis. Washington will compete in the supporting actor race.

Many of the first reactions from attendees at the first Los Angeles screening have been constructive.
OffScreenCentral’s Jillian Chilingerian wrote, “Denzel Washington’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for GLADIATOR 2 is right on time.”
KTLA contributor Scott Mantz called the film an “epic sequel,” adding that it had “great moves, great visuals, stellar performances across the board.”
“‘Gladiator II’ serves up the richest feast of epic motion set items and deliciously ribald treachery,” wrote freelancer Simon Thompson.
Matt Brennan of LA Occasions said that the film has “shit that hurts a lot,” adding that “‘we’re so again’ from the bloody costume epic.”
“Gladiator II” takes place 16 years after the events of the main film. The story follows Lucius (Mescal) – the grandson of former Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus (Russell Crowe). Lucius now lives with his wife and young child in Numidia. However, when Roman forces led by Common Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invade, they are forced into slavery. He must fight as a gladiator under the command of the current young emperors, Caracalla and Geta (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger).
Scott’s awards marketing campaign is a key focus for Paramount Footage, which is also pushing the Robbie Williams musical biopic “Tall Man” and the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage tragedy “September 5” this awards season. Of the three previous Oscar bids directed by Scott – which also included “Thelma & Louise” (1991) and “Black Hawk Down” (2001) – “Gladiator” was the closest shot to victory, beating Steven Soderbergh’s second nomination for “Sites.” visitor” (different nomination for “Erin Brockovich”).
While Scott’s critical reception has been inconsistent in recent years (namely, “Robin Hood” and “Exodus: Gods and Kings”), “Gladiator II” may be his best effort since “Black Hawk Down.” Although the sequels are particularly superior in the technical class, past history has proven that excellent films, such as Ang Lee’s “Lifetime of Pi” or Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity”, can push administrators to the stage of the Dolby Theater. In fact, Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful “Dune: Two and a Half” will be angling for the same class. Is there room for each?
Apparently, the history of the Oscars shows {that the director whose film won best picture, but the wrong class of director, may win with a sequel. Francis Ford Coppola achieved this when he misplaced the finest director for “The Godfather” (1972). Could the “Gladiator” franchise follow the same playbook? Customized scenario numbers may be important, but the class is already full of candidates.
“Gladiator II” could be a favorite with the Department of Actors. Washington’s charming and sinister portrayal of the evil Macrinus, a former slave who plots to rule Rome, is one of the most charismatic and entertaining of all performances. Perhaps the most amazing costume and a pair of hypnotic earrings, his work again earned him a second Oscar victory as the corrupt narcotics officer Alonzo in “Training Day.”
The villain role has historically been played effectively in the supporting actor class, with previous winners corresponding to Javier Bardem (“No Nation for Men Before”), Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”) and Heath Ledger (“The Darkish Knight”). Washington came here to get his 3rd Oscar not too long ago with his self-directed position in “Fences” (2016), only to quickly return to Casey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea”, even after winning the SAG Award. . However, with a seemingly thinner list of contenders and no clear contenders, Washington may be the new favorite to take it all. At least he also managed to get his first BAFTA nomination after more than 50 films and many snubs.
“Gladiator II” opens in theaters on November 22 from Paramount.
