Over the new year, it has become a tradition for some to go to the department store, and fill up purple pick n mix tins yourself.
Whether you choose a couple of additional Toffee Pennys, Caramel Swirls (and perhaps leave out the Coconut Eclair…) the power of choice is too good to resist.
And you can also add your own name – or the name of a lucky recipient – to the list for that special touch.
But this year, when pick n mix will be available in participating stores, the option to personalize the Quality Street tin is a matter of the month – and it has not gone down well with fans of festive sweets.
Taking to his social media platform, X, @whereisedm was the first to raise the alarm about his favorite ‘tradition’.
He wrote: ‘No special tins in Quality Street this year – it’s a tradition – please bring them back – it’s bad enough they’ve been moved from the Christmas Shop to the basement. Oxford Street’.
A disappointed @lottiegeography also posted about the change, telling followers: ‘Picked up a personal quality street tin for a refill at JL Oxford Street and wanted to get some special tins as a gift but they don’t do it anymore. No one knows why. Please tell me if it’s going to happen this year?’
Unfortunately for those who had planned to include tins in their Christmas haul this year, the tweets were not a cruel joke. They are, in fact, true.
Quality Street’s official account confirmed the change in a tweet telling chocolate lovers that they ‘cannot offer personalization this year’ but they are offering a ‘limited edition Christmas 2024 tin’.
In addition to the limited edition cans, the brand will also offer Christmas pouches available in six different designs.
Speaking to Metro, a John Lewis spokesperson also weighed in on the matter: ‘When it comes to personalisation, it’s all inside the tin this year – whether you’re Team Green Triangle or Coffee Cream, our store is just the place for you. can completely manage the contents of your Quality Street tin.
‘While we don’t sell special name cans, fans can get a great limited edition Christmas 2024 selection. We also introduced pouches with messages to match special occasions, such as “Quality Christmas”‘.
Thankfully, pick n’ mix will also continue to be available at participating stores, and X users have been reminded to sign up soon so you don’t miss out on your favorite flavors.
‘Last year… We ran out of Strawberry Cream. I’m furious’, @k_gilbey said.
Another warned fans not to try to beat the system: ‘We all like Coconut the best, so we’ll go to Woolworth & fill a full bag… one year, we’re told we can’t have it all because we don’t technically have that mix yet .’
According to the John Lewis website, 20 stores are offering Quality Street this year, including London’s Oxford Street store, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Cardiff.
