Feature A Reader worries that the PlayStation’s 30th anniversary will be the lowest point for Sony’s video game business.
It will soon be 28 years since I played my first PlayStation console. My 30th birthday is this December, but it doesn’t come out in the UK until next year and I don’t get Christmas until the following year. Still, it’s obviously a big anniversary for Sony and it’s time for them to take stock of where they are now and everything they’ve come up to. That is actually a very exciting thought.
At the end of the PlayStation 4 era, Sony was at the top of its game. Even with the good Switch, they have dominated the generation like no time since the PlayStation 2 and have the best exclusive games.
Then, well… you don’t need me to explain everything Sony has, or rather hasn’t, done over the last few years. My point is that all of this is for no reason, like a champion runner who feels that he is so far from the pack that he can just wander and walk for a while instead of getting the best time.
I would mention the tortoise and the rabbit, but I don’t feel Xbox even in this race. I suspect Sony doesn’t either, which may be why they are so complacent and arrogant. You’d think someone would be responsible for making sure that doesn’t happen, but in the last two years it doesn’t seem like anyone’s calling – certainly no one’s talking to the public.
I just can’t think of anything in PlayStation’s 30-year history where they’ve been in a worse position. The first few years of the PlayStation 3 were another contender but at least there was hope. Sony recognized their mistake and they made a plan to change it (and they did, but in the end it still exceeded the Xbox 360).
But this time? Sony hasn’t said anything yet. He hasn’t explained what he’s doing or if his plans have changed or if he thinks something is wrong. He talks and does nothing, like the captain of the Titanic, and I fear that the ship will sink very quickly in the anniversary year.
So they don’t seem to have done much to promote the 30th, only the fun gray color and some useful nick-nacks, and I imagine it’s because Sony is actively shy in that country at the moment. And if it doesn’t, it should.
I see we have rumors of another State of Play coming this week, so all the fans are hoping and dreaming that this will be the biggest one yet. This will be one that will change and start acting like it did in the PlayStation 4 era again, or even like it did in the first few years of the PlayStation 5.
But how many times have we looked forward to this year? Three, four times? And it never happened. Not only will it never happen, but Sony has never given any indication that they think anything is wrong or that they will do anything about it. What a miserable birthday.
