Scottie Scheffler put a bow on a magical season when he lifted the FedExCup for the first time in the Tour Championship. In a special PGA Tour player column, he reflects on his impressive season and victory at East Lake…
We’ve put in a lot of work to get to this point, and it’s been a long week. Right now, I’m just so tired that I don’t know how to write this. It’s a pretty special feeling to finally hold this trophy. All week, I tried to stay in the present, and I did a good job.
I think I handled it better mentally. In terms of the lead, it’s unusual to play several rounds with the lead and hold a seven-shot lead after the first round, something I probably wouldn’t have in any other tournament. It feels different and I feel that this tournament is longer than other tournaments.
If I look back now, I feel like I’ve spent almost a lifetime in this one year. I just always come back to faith and I think that keeps me grounded and keeps me in the right frame. I have led the list of FedExCup points for a long time, and came here with a little lead and could finish it off the right way nice.
I try not to think too much about the past or think too much about the future, but I think two years ago, it was quite difficult to have a good lead to the last round and then not play the best and end up losing.
Last year, I had an off week and it was disappointing too. So to come with the lead for the third time, and to be able to finish it is definitely pretty sweet.
I’ve been Player of the Year on the PGA Tour the last two seasons and I’m not leaving the FedExCup trophy behind. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth at the end of the year, especially when you start a tournament ahead of everyone else.
So, the last few years, I’ve been really pushing myself to do things or whatever, but this year I did a good job of staying mentally and keeping my head down and having a really good week. can be done the right way.
I got off to a good start in the final round and then I obviously had two holes on seven and eight (where he made bogeys), and Teddy (Ted Scott, his caddy) did a good job of keeping me focused. I was able to hit a good nine for birdie and really change the momentum.
Teddy gives great speeches all the time. That’s why he’s such a good caddy. I don’t think a day has gone by that he hasn’t given me good advice or a laugh when I needed it.
He is truly his greatest asset on the field. I don’t know if I would have been able to do this without him in the bag. He has a habit of saying the right thing at the right time to keep me in the right frame of mind.
He gave me a good pep talk behind the eighth green because I kind of looked at people like, man, I don’t know about this; this doesn’t look so hot right now. I was able to hit a nice iron shot there and got it rolling. It really changed the momentum of the round.
All in all, it was a great year. I am proud of the results. It’s something I try not to focus too much on, but at the end of the day, being able to win the tournament is a great feeling, and that’s what we can go to, and be able to have as many wins as this year. it’s really special.
I’m hoping to go home and rest for a week or so before we start preparing for the President’s Cup because that’s the tournament I want us to go out and win at Royal Montreal. It’s been a great year and it’s been really fun.
