Olympics 2024 LIVE: Alex Yee takes triathlon gold and Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix in diving final after Beth Potter wins bronze for Team GB

South Africa’s Henri Schoeman led the way back to the starting bridge with Australia’s Matt Hauser close behind in second.

There is not much that can be separated from the entire field that is combined with the leader. The triathlete has been in the water for eight minutes and has reached the end of the swim section.

Unlike the previous women’s event, the men’s triathlon started with “calm” water and the sun shining in Paris. There is a humdrum buzz from fans watching as athletes power through the early stages of this 1500m swim.

They approach the first buoy and start the turn. It looks like Australia’s Luke Williams is close to the front of the race, but we will have more clarity when we return to the Alexandre III bridge.

The men’s triathlon, postponed a day after the swimming conditions in the Seine yesterday, will take place.

Alex Yee was positioned on the pontoon near the French athletes. It’s easy to see why the organizers are so eager to get the triathlon here. Spectacular views.

The start counter starts and the triathletes dive into the water!

Georgia Taylor-Brown spoke to BBC TV after finishing sixth for Team GB in the women’s triathlon:

“The girls are amazing, I like to make the front pack and that’s where I have to be and then I run and I have nothing and they are amazing, very fast today. Hats off to everyone, it was a great race.

“Swimming is horrible. On the way back, under the bridge, that’s not fun. That’s really, really hard. You don’t think about it when you’re racing, you just make dough and finish.

Alex Yee is living up to the legacy of the Brownlee brothers who have been sending boys to Team GB triathlon since the start of the decade. Neither brother is competing in Paris with Yee, England’s best chance of winning the goal.

He said: “He has created a legacy for us, not just for the British men’s side, but all of British triathlon in general.

“We’re really lucky to have him. I think the onus has now passed on to us and we’ll do our best to represent the country and Team GB to the best of our ability and hopefully make everyone proud.”

“From 2012 and being able to watch the Olympics in my home town is a rare experience for most people, so I’m very lucky. And then to be able to share the gold medal with Jonny in 2021 is really special. I hope that I can be an inspiration to people like he is to me others and continue the legacy.

Alex Yee is hoping to inspire the next generation of triathletes with a performance in Paris as he takes over the mantle from the Brownlee brothers.

For the first time in 20 years, Brownlee’s name will not feature in the British Olympic team, with Alistair now concentrating on other challenges and Jonny having missed out on selection.

Among them, the Yorkshire brothers won five Olympic medals, with Alistair the only triathlete to win two golds, in London and Rio, and Jonny has won individual bronze and silver, then gold in Tokyo three years ago as part of the relay team.

The Independent’s Lawrence Ostlere in Paris awaits the start of the men’s triathlon:

“All 56 bikes are ready in the transition zone before this men’s Olympic triathlon, except for one.

“Alex Yee wandered last, found a place at the end of the Alexandre III bridge and began to collect his things. It was strangely mesmerizing: he wiped each tire clean of dirt with his fingers, then carefully positioned the bike on the stand.

“He put down his coach like glass, then stood up, looked back and moved a bit. Then he walked back to the athlete’s room in the Grand Palais.

“He looks so focused and so cold at the same time.”

“I dug deep and found more,” Potter added when asked about going all the way to the four-pack.

“I’m just trying to stay in the top five and stay in front and especially no problem. I got caught behind a couple of accidents on the bike but managed to stay upright. I just tried to stay sensible and not get caught.

“They said it would be dry but it was obviously wet (to play). I live and train in Leeds so I’m used to those conditions and I’ve done a lot of sessions with the boys in the rain. I’m ready and I don’t want to make any silly mistakes and I making sure I stay on good wheels and try to stay safe.

In the end he reflected on the upcoming race and backed Alex Yee to bring home the gold saying: “I will consider my fellow GB athletes to hope Alex wins today.”

Another reaction from bronze medalist Beth Potter who spoke to BBC TV after her impressive performance in the triathlon. He said:

“I’m very happy, I was going for the gold but Cassandre and Julie were just too good for me today, but I’m very happy to get away with bronze. I’ve come a long way in eight years and I’m very happy to be here with a bronze medal.

“I’m doing this for me but I’m also doing it for all the people who have helped me for eight years and believed in me from day one. It’s also for them to go home.”
