Normani opened up about her relationship with her boyfriend, DK Metcalf, and how it went Ciara and wife of an NFL player, Russell Wilson, organized the first meeting. During the chat with Ebro Darden for Ebro event on Apple Music 1 about the long-awaited debut album release, DopamineThe singer shared how the mother of four’s determination to let her meet the NFL wide receiver led to her new romance.
“He’s a light for me, especially when I’m at my lowest point,” the singer told Darden about him. “He showed up today – didn’t know he was coming. But I need him.”
When asked how she and the 26-year-old Seattle Seahawks player met, Normani explained that Ciara and Wilson introduced the two. Wilson played for the Seahawks from 2012 to 2022, previously he was traded to the Denver Broncos. Wilson was there was released from the Broncos in early March and confirmed reported that he would join the Pittsburgh Steelers that same month.
Ciara and Wilson have been married since 2016 and the couple have three children together, as well as Ciara’s son, Future Zahir, from a previous relationship.
“Like, if you can trust (any) partner, that’s going to be a partner,” Normani quips. “(The) number of times (Ciara) was like, ‘Hey, I know this guy.'”
While the singer admitted that Metcalf had expressed interest in her “for a long time,” she didn’t have the right mindset to pursue a relationship. But when he was ready and “opportunity became available,” he took a leap of faith.
“Doja has something ELLE, he was respected. I went to I went to another friend’s release party. Then C(iara), he kept texting me. They had a brand of alcohol they were launching, but they really insisted that I come. It was tough,” Normani recalled of the preparations for her and Metcalf’s first meeting.
The 28-year-old singer said that while she intended to “stop by,” she had a feeling that Ciara was angling for more because of her presence. “I only knew there was something else because he was so assertive,” she quips. “When I was on the road, he was like, ‘Oh yeah, your son will be there.’ I said, ‘Okay, I see what you’re trying to do here.’ He did the same thing to her when he played Cupid.
Normani points out that Metcalf has heard it too Dopaminewhich was released on June 14. “He inspired some of the notes,” the singer told Darden, bashfully.

After Normani and members of the group Fifth Harmony — originally comprised of Lauren Jauregui, Dinah Jane, Camila Cabello, and Ally Brooke — announced they are going on an indefinite hiatus for the “purse solo effort” back in March 2018, the singer’s solo career has consisted of sporadic singles released in the last few years, although most drops have been met with a lot of praise.

The singer said her parents’ cancer diagnosis forced her to think about her own goals as an artist, giving her perspective on how she wants to move forward in the future. “Honestly, music got them through cancer treatment. I remember on FaceTime with my mom when she was going through chemo and she asked me, ‘How was the studio today? How’s the music coming?'” he told the outlet. “Although it was difficult for me not to be with them as much as I would have liked, in the end, pushing the situation in the last few years made it easier for my parents.”
“It was that moment with my parents that made me realize that I have a chance to make an impact in this life,” she added. “I know everything I’ve been through is not in vain. There is always something that God wants me to see in the future. It’s all in the service of making me better for everything that actually has in store for me.”
All said, the long journey has been worth it to lead Normani to Dopaminealbum he said “feels like freedom” and “time of freedom.”
