Miranda Hart says getting married in midlife is an injection of joy and fun, after revealing she got married at 51.
The comedian and actress is married to a man she met during the pandemic.
“That’s the best!” she said. “He’s my best friend, we have fun… The fact that I can meet people – this is not a rom-com story but it’s about hope, and that’s why I think, no matter what situation you’re in, there’s always hope. things really change.”
She discusses that relationship in her new book, and also opens up about her struggle with chronic fatigue after being diagnosed with Lyme disease.
The star, who is best known for her BBC sitcom Miranda, told the BBC it had been a “tough few years”, but she was “happy” with her marriage, and “very happy to get back to some silliness”.
“It’s great to be back on television, I’m really happy here,” she told The One Show.
“Because if you’re bedridden and married to a chronic illness based on fatigue that takes a long time to diagnose — which I’m sad to know a lot of people will understand — you’re going to miss life. So I’m very happy. sitting here.”
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can spread to humans through tick bites.
This disease can be easily treated if it is detected and diagnosed early, but for a long time the actor did not know what caused him to be unwell.
It often starts with a circular rash and can cause flu-like symptoms, nerve pain and sometimes droop (facial palsy) on one, or both, sides of the face.
For most people, these symptoms are short-term and can be alleviated with antibiotics, but a minority continue to experience longer-term symptoms, including chronic fatigue and unexplained neurological problems.
The star said it was difficult for him to be confined to his home for such a long period of time.
“Unless you’re exhausted (like that), you don’t know what it’s like not to get off the floor,” Hart told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
“I’m basically bed-bound – and housebound. There will be times where I will look at the glass of water, and think ‘I don’t know how to pick it up’.
“All anyone wants is to be heard, accepted, loved and seen… and if you’re not – especially in a medical situation – that’s the worst.”
Part of the reason he wrote the book was to share his findings about what helped him recover, he said.
“I think I should look into all the work and dialogue about health that is out there, but I just sleep at home, the doctors don’t know what to do and I can’t get a cold or stay in bed. yoga retreat.
“So I thought what is the universal truth? So I did research for years, when I thought I could, and in that book there are 10 keys, which I call my treasure, to live well.
“And they really (helped). I feel like even though I’m suffering, I’m living a life of joy and meaning and fulfillment in a way I’ve never experienced before.
“I feel like I know who I really am, in a way that I didn’t know I needed, which is amazing.”
When he finally received his diagnosis, he was able to trace the condition back to his teenage years.
“Probably when I was about 14 or 15 years old, I got lice … and that’s when my symptoms started,” she recalls.
“It’s a relief. I mean, being misunderstood and misjudged is one of the hardest things about a situation like that. It has to be.”
The actress, who began her career performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in the early 2000s, remains famous for her portrayal of the hapless and socially awkward Miranda in the self-titled TV sitcom that ran from 2009 to 2015.
After taking time to rest and recover, and with his new wife by his side, Hart suggested he finally felt well enough to start a new project.
“I really want to go back to some silliness now, I miss the studio floor, I miss laughing.”
After appearing on The One Show, Hart said he was delighted with the fans as the marriage was “very touching”.
Post a video on Xhe said: “I have my best friend to do life and it’s great, and I’m also totally happy to be back in the land of television and have a book out, thank you very much for all the support.”
Hart ends the video with his wife – only her hands are visible in the clip – which he jokes is “exclusive”.
She has not revealed her identity, and said she won’t say how they met until the book is published because it’s “a bit of a twist”.
His book, titled I Am Not Being Honest With You, was published on Thursday, October 10.
