UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot to death early Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, according to multiple reports.
Police believe the killing was a “targeted attack,” Ing New York Post reported. A manhunt is currently underway for the shooter who fled eastbound on 6th Avenue. No arrests have been made.
The suspect was not a guest at the hotel, but was seen lingering outside the door before opening fire on the victim. He then ran through an alley, got on his bicycle and is believed to have run into Central Park.
He was described by witnesses at the scene as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket and a black ski mask.
Police said they will offer $10,000 to anyone with information about Thompson’s shooting, according to the report The New York Times.
Thompson, who joined parent company UnitedHealth Group in 2004, and became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021, was shot in the chest around 6:46 a.m. outside the hotel. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Elena Reveiz, Thompson’s sister, told The New York Times she’s still processing the news, but said her sister was “a good person, and I’m really sad.”

The suspected gunman reportedly waited for Thompson outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan for 10 minutes before opening fire when he arrived.
He then ran through an alley, got on his bicycle and is believed to have run into Central Park.
The suspect was described by witnesses at the scene as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket and a black ski mask.
Like Thompson, he was not a guest at the hotel, but was seen setting fire nearby before opening fire on the victim.

“He’s a good guy and I’m sad,” Reveiz said.
Thompson is also a good father to his two children, she added.

The suspected gunman reportedly waited for the CEO outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan for 10 minutes before opening fire when he arrived, law enforcement officials told CNN.
He wore a mask as he waited outside in sub-freezing temperatures.
The shooter was reportedly about 20 feet from the CEO when he started shooting. He then ran through an alley, got on his bicycle and is believed to have run into Central Park.
