Here are the key exchanges between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris from Tuesday night’s debate in Philadelphia:
Abortion
Trump: “What I’ve done, for 52 years, they’ve been trying to bring Roe v. Wade to the country, and through the genius and the heart and the strength of six Supreme Court justices, we’ve been able to do it.”
Harris: “When Congress passed the Bill to restore the protection of Roe v. Wade, as President of the United States, I was proud to sign it into law. … I think the American people believe that certain freedoms, the freedom to make decisions about themselves, should not be done by government.
2020 election
Harris: “Donald Trump was dismissed by 81 million people, so we explain this, and it is clear that he is having a very difficult time processing it, but we cannot have the President of the United States as in the past. the will of the voters in a free and fair election. “
Israel-Hamas war
Trump: “If he becomes president, I believe that Israel will not exist in two years from now, and I have been very good at predicting, and I hope I am wrong about that.”
Harris: “We must determine the path to a two-state solution, and in that solution, there must be security for the Israeli People and Israelis, and in equal measure for the Palestinians.”
Wild card
Trump: In Springfield, (Haitian migrants) eat dogs. People who come in, are eating cats. They are eating, they are eating people’s pets. And this is happening in our country, and it’s a shame
In an assassination attempt
Trump: “I might have taken a bullet in the head because of what he said about (me). He said about democracy, I’m a threat to democracy – he’s a threat to democracy.”
Ukraine
Harris: “If Donald Trump becomes president, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will be sitting in Kyiv right now … with his eyes on the rest of Europe, starting with Poland. And why don’t you tell the 800,000 Polish Americans here in Pennsylvania how soon you will give up for favors and what you think is friendship with (Putin, who) is known as a dictator, who will eat you for lunch.”
Trump: “Putin endorsed him last week (and) said, ‘I hope he wins,’ and I think he means it, because what he’s done is extraordinary. It would never happen to me. Other leaders think that ( Biden and Harris) are weak and incompetent, and rightly so. They are very incompetent.”
immigration
Trump: “Why are we allowing millions of people to come to the southern border? How come they’re not doing anything? … I want to see them go to Washington, DC during this debate, because we’re wasting a lot of time … the evening. You say, ‘Come on, come down to the office. Let’s sign the bill.’ If he signs a bill that the border is closed, all he has to do is tell the border patrol.
National Security
Harris: “The former National Security Adviser (Trump) said he was dangerous and inappropriate. The former Secretary of Defense said that the country, the Republicans, will not survive under Trump. And when you hear this kind of rhetoric, when the issues that affect the American people not addressed, I think the choice is clear in the election.
Trump: “I fired most of them, not a lot. They did bad things or bad things. I fired them. They never fired one person. They didn’t fire anybody that had anything to do with Afghanistan and the Taliban and people 13 who were just killed, killed cruelly and violently. And I know the parents and the family, they did not fire – they should have fired all those generals, all the top people, because this is one of the situations that cannot be handled with impunity by anyone.
economy
Trump: “I went to the Wharton School of Finance, and many professors think my (economic) plan is a good plan. It’s a great plan. It’s a plan that will raise our work, our value as a country.
It will make people want to work and create jobs and make a lot of good money for our country. And just to top it all off, he had no plans. He copied Biden’s plan, and it was like four sentences, like, ‘Run spot, Run.’ Four sentences that are just, ‘Oh, we’ll try and reduce taxes.’ He had no plans. Look at her plan. They don’t have a plan.”
