Caroline Dubois is gunning for the WBC lightweight world champion and current belt holder, Irish boxing legend Katie Taylor.
Dubois fights Maira Moneo for the interim WBC lightweight title on Saturday, August 3, live at Sky Sports.
But the Londoner wants the full world championship at 135lbs, which Taylor still holds even though the Irish star has operated at super-lightweight, 140lbs, where he is now the undisputed world champion after avenging his only pro loss to Chantelle Cameron.
A win over Moneo would establish Dubois as the mandatory challenger for the WBC lightweight world title.
“You have a veteran holding the belt who hasn’t fought in over a year. It’s frustrating for people like me because we’re just waiting to see what other people decide,” Dubois said. Sky Sports.
“This winner will be a command against Katie Taylor. It’s a good position and we’ll see what happens.”
Taylor is also the unsputed champion in lightweight. Although he has now relinquished his IBF and WBO titles, he still holds the WBA belt as well as the WBC title at 135lbs. Taylor will be fighting Amanda Serrano this year but at 140lbs.
“He’s holding the belt hostage, it’s frustrating for someone like me, frustrating for someone in my position but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. I hope he vacates or the next fight, God willing, we fight him,” Dubois announced. “This is going to be a mega fight.
“Everybody wants the big fish and Katie is probably the biggest fish for a long time.
“The winner of this (Moneo) fight is mandatory.
“If (Taylor) isn’t going to fight, he needs to vacate,” Dubois continued. “We are the new faces that are coming.
“Me and other girls like me, we are the new faces to take the place.”
‘Cruel and fun’
Dubois decided to dominate Moneo in the match on August 3 at the Oakwell stadium in Barnsley.
The only loss on Uruguay’s record was a disqualification for a headbutt to Yanina Lescano, a mutual opponent and world title challenger whom Dubois defeated last year.
Dubois expects Moneo to use the same home tactics as he did.
“I believe that he will do it when I start winning and win easily. The only way he will succeed is by making it messy and dirty and rough and rough and trying to throw me and that kind of way,” said Dubois.
The British believe that everything will remain well. “He’s aggressive, non-stop, fighting with his heart on his sleeve, just going in the face. I think it’s a great fight. I think it’s a great preparation for what’s next,” said Dubois.
But he promised: “You will see what is always seen. You will see the ferocity, excitement, skill and style of Caroline Dubois step in the ring and what I have done. I want to try and go to the knockout and be as exciting as I can for the fans.
“If it comes, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. All I want is a beatdown and really put Moneo in his place and let it be known that I’m top level.”
