Jennifer Lopez has filed for divorce from Ben Affleck after two years of marriage, Us Weekly can confirm.
Lopez, 55, filed for divorce Tuesday, Aug. 20, in a Los Angeles court. Lopez listed the split date as April 26, which is three months before she and Affleck, 51, celebrate their two-year wedding anniversary.
The singer submitted the document himself, rather than through a lawyer, on the two-year anniversary of the estranged couple’s Georgia wedding. (Affleck and Lopez married in a private ceremony in Las Vegas before toasting their union in Georgia with family and friends.)
News of the couple’s divorce comes after months of reports that their marriage was on the rocks. The duo went weeks without being seen together before us confirmed in May that Affleck had moved out of the home they shared in Beverly Hills. In July, Lopez and Affleck did not celebrate their second wedding anniversary.
A special source us months the couple were “living apart” as they navigated ups and downs. “Jennifer suggested they take time to figure it out,” the insider said.
At the time, another source told me us that there is still a “sliver of hope” for the couple’s relationship, adding that the official decision about the future has not been made.
When Lopez celebrated her 55th birthday in the Hamptons last month, Affleck was absent. He sent a loving message to his fans via Instagram after the milestone.
“I want you to know on my birthday that YOU are my greatest gift,” she wrote. “Besides family and friends, you are always there for me in good times and in difficult times. I can always count on you. And I want you to know that you can count on me. Thank you for your care, understanding, loyalty and that most importantly love you. 🤍 Thank you, thank you, thank you…”
One of the most talked about Hollywood couples of the 21st century, Affleck and Lopez started dating in 2002, meeting on set Gigi. The couple finally called off their last engagement in 2004 and, after several marriages and divorces, reunited twenty years later in 2021. After the reunion, Affleck proposed a second time in April 2022 while Lopez was taking a bubble bath. They eloped three months later in Las Vegas.
“We’re planning to get married in August in Savannah, the family will be there, everyone will be there, and it’s very stressful,” Lopez said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January 2023. “A month before, and I don’t know if you know this, but 20 years ago we were supposed to get married. And then it all came crashing down and this time, I actually had PTSD and I was like, ‘Did this happen?’ “
She continued at the time, “One day Ben just said, ‘F–k it, let’s go to Vegas and get married tonight.’ He was like, ‘Go practice (for your show), when you come back here, I’ll get everything ready.’ “
Lopez and Affleck got married at Sin City’s The Little White Wedding Chapel with only their children as witnesses. Lopez shares her twins Max and Emme, 16, with her ex-husband Marc Anthony when Affleck and his ex-wife Jennifer Garner the parents’ children are Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 11.
At Marry Me actress and Affleck held a bigger ceremony a few months later in August 2022. Their relationship again even inspired Lopez’s album. This Is Me… Now, which came out earlier this year. A short film and a behind-the-scenes documentary were released in February.
“I don’t think he’s very happy with me doing all this,” Lopez says at one point in the doc. “But he loves me, he knows I’m an artist and he’ll support me in every way he can because he knows he can’t stop me from making the music I make and writing the words I write. It’s going to happen, and he doesn’t want it to stop me. … But that doesn’t mean he’s comfortable being a muse.”
Meanwhile, Affleck noted in a separate scene that he was proud of Lopez’s self-funded art project.
Lopez has been married three times before: to Ojani Noa 11 months in 1997, Chris Judd from 2001 to 2002 and Anthony, 55, from 2004 to 2014. He also participated in Alex Rodriguez between 2019 and 2021.
