MaXXXine has received the first reaction as the third and final film in the X Ti West trilogy hits theaters.
The A24 film sees Mia Goth return to her role as Maxine Minx after the adult film star survived the first film event, X 2022.
After escaping with her life, Maxine gets her big break in Hollywood, but when a mysterious serial killer starts stalking the streets of Los Angeles, her sinister past is revealed.
The Infinity Pool Goth star wasn’t the only big star among the cast, as she was joined by Halsey, Lily Collins, Elizabeth Debicki, Sophie Thatcher, and Kevin Bacon.
Ahead of its UK cinema release on July 2nd, early screenings of the film have been highly praised, with MaXXXine earning an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fresh fiction described the film as ‘Gutsy, gritty and grisly’, adding: ‘West and the leading lady for gusto and the result is a total blast.’
Empire Review said: ‘Mia Goth’s Maxine would have asked if Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster from Taxi Driver were combined in a telepod from Fly.’
Daily Dead added: ‘Maxxxine strikes a pose, cracks a few skulls, and gets unexpectedly goofy, but the pastiche feels skin-deep at times. West tries to have it all … only to undersell competing features because of overstuffed ambitions.’
Meanwhile, Inverse wrote: ‘West’s last entry into the modern horror canon seamlessly came to a confident and glorious close, the star immortalized in her bloody triumph of self.’
West’s trilogy begins with X, which sees a group of adult movie stars travel to a remote Texas ranch owned by elderly couple Pearl and Howard to shoot their next picture.
However, when Pearl catches the group in the act of filming x-rated content, the young man soon finds himself fighting for his life.
Goth appeared as Maxine and Pearl in the film and was praised for her excellent double acting role where she appeared unrecognizable as the wise ranch owner.
The actor returns to her role as Pearl in the 2023 sequel named after her. Pearl takes us back to the Texas farm where we see the titular character under her strict, conservative mother and flawed father.
He dreams of stardom on the Hollywood stage – and with a big audition looming, his dream seems within his grasp – but Pearl’s grip on reality and bloodthirsty desire threaten everything.
Speaking to Variety, Goth explained how the role of Pearl ‘changed her’ as she described the gig as ‘the hardest’.
‘I believe Pearl has fundamentally changed me as a player. It gave me a new sense of self and a new level of confidence in terms of what I can do,’ he continued.
‘It’s a lot, but it’s also an amazing gift and a playable gift. I really feel like it has changed me in so many ways for the better.’
MaXXXine was released on July 2nd.
