‘Hellbent’ David lands Gail in hospital after disappearing on Coronation Street | Soap

When Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) ends up in intensive care abroad after cosmetic surgery gone wrong on Coronation Street, the big worry is how her family will pay her medical bills and bring her back from Turkey.

Gail (Helen Worth) feels the only realistic solution is to take out a bridging loan, then sell number 8 to pay off the loan.

In the next episode the house goes on the market and very quickly Carla Connor (Alison King) shows interest in it and comes round to make an offer. She is surprised by the reaction she receives from David (Jack P Shepherd), who has determined that the family home will not be sold.

Jack P Shepherd described his character’s fierce attachment to the house.

‘David has always been hellbent is his house, and it has never been one of the other brothers ‘house, only David,’ he mused.

‘The head is a birthright! He never moved, but maybe he should. That’s why he always insists that it’s his house, and it’s just Nick (Ben Price) and Sarah (Tina O’Brien). But because he considered his house, when Gail sold his house, he started.’

Jack also revealed that he and co-star Alison King had fun filming the scene.

‘Carla came sniffing round and David wasn’t having it. It’s funny because Ali and I rarely have scenes together, and he always says he wants more scenes with me. We are having fun. I just messed around in a lot of people, and I made her laugh. You should watch it while it’s on, because it’s funny. It makes me laugh and I love doing comedy scenes with David.’

As funny as this scene is, it takes one seriously when David’s behavior lands Gail in the hospital, as Jack told us.

‘He almost arm wrestles the ‘for sale’ sign off the estate agent in the garden. He didn’t like it, obviously. He starts yelling and kicking and this causes a lot of stress for Gail. And lo and behold, he ended up in the back of the ambulance.’

When Gail is taken to hospital, David blames himself – and his mood is discovered by Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson).

‘She’s out, and she’s thinking about herself, and then Jesse’s thinking, is she okay? He looked like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, like he was hiding something,’ Jack explained.

‘So he went out to try and pick David’s brain and find out what was going on. And David just said that it was his fault. He’s been putting his mother through a lot of stress over the years, especially now, things are not helping with Bethany and she’s not helping around the house all the time.’

David has certainly caused Gail heartache over the years – but could this be the last straw? Jack said that David and his brothers must be very concerned.

‘We went straight to the hospital. We ask how is he? What’s up? It’s touch and go. He was very worried, it was clear that he was going to lose his mother.’
