Onam is a festival of unique cultural beauty, held in the Indian state of Kerala to welcome back King Mahabali. It also commemorates the fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu, Vamana avatar.
According to mythology, Indra dev and other gods sought Lord Vishnu’s help after being defeated by Mahabali, the asura king. To do this Lord Vishnu took Vamana avatar. During the puja, Vamana requested for three steps of land to build a fire altar which Mahabali agreed to. Vamana grows in size and covers the entire universe and extends only three steps. So, Mahabali was told to go and because he was very fond of his kingdom, he was granted his wish to visit his kingdom once a year. This celebration is called Onam.
It is celebrated for ten days in August-September and is a mix of tradition, community and fun. Preparations for Onam celebrations usually start early. Houses are decorated with colorful flowers in a style called ‘Pookalam’. This flower carpet not only adds beauty to the onam festival but also serves as a prayer for Raja mahabali. The tradition of wearing traditional Kerala clothing like white mundu and sari is common as families try their best to celebrate the day. Onam is an auspicious time of the year due to the joyous celebrations and parties popularly known as ‘Sadya.’ Here the sumptuous spread consists only of vegetarian dishes consisting of rice, sambar, avial, payasam, etc. and all served on banana leaves.
