A father-of-two was killed instantly after he was run over by a car used ‘as a weapon’ during a dispute between two families over a wedding, a court has heard.
Chris Marriott, 46, has stopped to help a woman who was lying unconscious in the street in College Court, Sheffield, on December 27 last year.
While tending to Nafeesa Jhangur, the pair were surrounded by a Seat Ibiza driven by her brother, Hassan Jhangur, 24, a juror at the city’s crown court.
Prosecutor Tom Storey KC said Jhangur plowed into five people, including his alleged target and new brother-in-law Hasan Khan, who he then stabbed multiple times.
He told the court the background to the rampage was a dispute between Jhangur’s family and Mr. Khan’s family after the party that morning between the victim and Nafeesa Jhangur.
Mr Storey added: ‘You can infer exactly what (Jhangur’s) intention was when he came to College Close – namely, to kill Hasan Khan.’
He said Ms Jhangur ended up lying on the street after a confrontation between her and a member of the Khan family that morning, after Mr Khan and Amaani Jhangur’s wedding.
He said that Amaani Jhangur had broken up with his family about the wedding and he did not attend.
As the Khan family celebrated the wedding at their College Court home, the bride’s mother, Ambreen Jhangur, arrived and threw a bag of clothes in the drive in bin liners before driving off.
Then, he returned to the address with his daughter, Nafeesa, again throwing things into the drive.
Prosecutors said there was an argument between the two women and a member of Khan’s family that caused Nafeesa to fall to the floor.
He said Mr. Marriott and his family had just returned from Christmas break with his father-in-law and went out for a walk as one of the children wanted to try out a new skateboard.
Mr. Storey said the accused appeared to have been alerted to what was happening in College Court and headed for the chair.
He said Riasat Khan was standing in the middle of the road talking to a 999 operator.
Prosecutors said that “he would have been clearly visible to the approaching motorist” but was hit by Jhangur who “drove straight into him”, throwing Mr Khan on the hood of the car, his head appearing to strike the windscreen.
‘He then cartwheeled over the roof of the vehicle, as it continued below him without apparently braking or deviating from its path,’ Mr Storey said.
The chair then collided with the group around Nafeesa Jhangur, he said.
Mr Storey continued: ‘The Ibiza chair drove over Chris Marriott, almost killing him instantly.
‘It also drove Nafeesa Jhangur, who was seriously injured, and also drove or collided with Ambreen Jhangur and Alison Norris, who were both seriously injured.
‘After the vehicle stopped, Hassan Jhangur got out of the car, armed with a knife which he then used to stab Riasat Khan’s son, Hasan Khan, stabbing him several times on the side of the head and on the left side. side of the chest, puncturing the lungs in the process.
He said police arrived to find ‘a scene of chaos with members of both families shouting in the street, and other members of the public trying to help those who were attacked by the Ibiza Chair’.
Mr Storey added: ‘Hassan Jhangur’s actions showed that he intended to kill that day. His main target was Hasan Khan, but he was prepared to use the car as a weapon, with the intention of causing at least serious harm to others.’
Jhangur, from Sheffield, denied manslaughter and manslaughter, but jurors were told he pleaded guilty to causing Mr Marriott’s death by dangerous driving.
He also admitted causing serious injury to Alison Norris, Ambreen Jhangur, Nafeesa Jhangur and Riasat Khan by dangerous driving.
Jhangur denied trying to kill Hasan Khan and wounding him with intent.
He also pleaded not guilty to four charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Jhangur appeared in the dock alongside his father, Mohammed Jhangur, 56, from Sheffield, who denied perverting the course of justice. The charges relate to him allegedly hiding a knife.
