Paul Mescal hopes “Glicked” is the new “Barbenheimer” by urging moviegoers to get the double feature of “Gladiator II” and “Depraved.”
“I think they complement each other so well because they’re so different,” the Oscar-nominated actor told me at the “Gladiator II” premiere Monday evening in Los Angeles. “And if you like cinema, go to the market and help. Don’t expect to return to streamers, because we are at an important crossroads. Now we have a moment with theatrical films. If cinema is a factor for you, go out and watch every film.
Fred Hechinger, who played the Emperor Caracalla in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel, said he was planning a “Glicked” day at the theater. “I really enjoyed ‘Depraved,'” he said. “I’ll sing ‘Defying Gravity.'”
Speaking of singing, Mescal and Hechinger also detailed going to a karaoke bar while selling “Gladiator II” in Japan.
“I’ve been walking around this corner because after I did the press for ‘Aftersun,’ I was like, ‘I hate karaoke. I hate karaoke,'” Mescal said. “But I bought a rope to do it, and I like it.”
Is his track belt? “I did ‘The Climb’,” he replied.
Is she hitting Miley Cyrus level notes? “No way. I used to be drunk. It’s great,” Mescal said with a smile. “It’s not about – it’s about passion.”
“I partook in as good,” Hechinger, who added Shania Twain’s “You’re But One,” said in “The Climb” efficiency. “I think karaoke is made for people who don’t have a voice. I think if you have a great voice, it’s a shame that you can do karaoke.
The “Gladiator II” press tour also included a royal premiere in London with King Charles III. “There’s not one thing that I think is on the bingo playing cards,” Mescal said of his interactions with the British king. “I’m Irish, so it’s not on the priority list. But it’s a huge factor for Ridley (Scott) because I know how important it is to him. So to see the film celebrated in that context is pretty special.
Mescal could not remember what King Charles had said to him. “I find it tiring to listen to what they say because your head is in such a frenzy that you just nod and just smile.”
