Freddie Prinze Jr. not confirmed for I Know What You Did Last Summer come back quite yet – but promise he’ll try his best.
“It’s not a lock until the ink is on the paper, until the contract is signed, but I always talk to him,” Prinze Jr., 48, said exclusively. Us Weekly when discussing his new film The Girl in the Pool. “And if we can make it work – and I know he wants to make it work, I know I want to make it work – then we’ll try and make it work. But we’ve got to make sure everyone’s schedule fits.
He continued, “Everyone should like the script. I know Jen Robinson, the director (of the revival), and I really like Jen Robinson as a director and as a person. I think people like her are the future of this business. So many good that made me want to make the movie.
When Prinze Jr. stressing that the return is not confirmed “until the contract or deal is done,” he understands that everyone involved hopes it can happen. “I’m motivated, I know he’s motivated. I know both sides are trying to make it work. And I hope we can do it,” he said.
Prinze Jr. played Ray in the 1997 horror film opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe and his wife now, Sarah Michelle Gellar. This story follows four young friends who are bound by a tragic accident and find themselves stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small coastal town. Early films written by shouted screenwriter Kevin Williamson and is based on the author’s 1973 novel of the same name Lois Duncan.
While Phillippe and Gellar did not sign on for the sequel, Prinze Jr. and Hewitt, who plays the last girl (and Ray’s love interest) Julie, returns to I Still Don’t Know What You Did This Summer, Bro next year.
Both are Prinze. Jr. and Hewitt apparently survived the second film as well, with Ray and Julie revealed to be happily married after the time jump. However, the final moments leave the audience on a cliffhanger as Julie is about to be swept under the bed, screaming as a mysterious hook pulls her under.
Where will fans find Ray and Julie in 2024, says Prinze Jr. “I don’t know. I will never know where we find him,” the actor said us. “I don’t know what the world is going to play. I just know that everybody is trying to make it.”
A third installment of the franchise was released in 2006, titled I will always know what you did last summerbut it stars a new cast and was just released straight to video. While Prime Video tried to reboot the franchise with a TV series in 2021, the show was canceled after one season.
Earlier this year, Sony announced that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Make Revenge) will direct the new revival of the screenplay he co-wrote Sam Lansky, and that Prinze Jr. and Hewitt were in talks to reprise their roles. The film will star Madelyn Klin and Camila Mendeswith Tony Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King also in negotiations. The film is slated to release on July 18, 2025.
Hewitt, who spoke with us weeks before the new film was confirmed, he said that he and Prinze Jr. were in “holding time” as they waited to hear about their potential engagement, but the actress noted that she believed both would “definitely return” if the story felt. correct.
