The former chairman of the Chinese Communist Party’s House Select Committee warned of an accelerating software and technology race between the United States and China, arguing that supply chain weapons could force a war between the free world and its totalitarian rivals.
Former Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., told Fox News political leader Bret Baier about a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) op-ed which he wrote Sunday, outlining concerns about China’s technological dominance.
“On the modern battlefield, we must not only know the enemy but know ourselves and map the supply chain in detail,” he said Monday in “Special Report.”

Gallagher, head of defense for Palantir Technologies, a Denver-based software company, highlighted how China could use port cranes manufactured around the world to disrupt international trade if the United States were to become involved in a conflict with China over Taiwan.
“The Biden administration recently warned that Chinese-made port cranes could be ‘controlled … from a remote location.’ European companies have discovered that a Chinese group can gain access to the systems that control cargo ships. or kill,” he wrote in the WSJ.
Gallagher added that there is bipartisan support in Congress for a tougher US approach to China, but demanded that the Biden administration pursue the idea that the interests of the United States align with the CCP when using responsible technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).
“I think that’s stupid. I’m only interested in Xi Jinping when it comes to AI in the domination of technology and using it for dystopian totalitarian purposes,” said Baier.

“And I think in the light of the fence attack (in Lebanon), in the light of the weaponization of the wider supply chain, we will see the bifurcation of the world into a pile of totalitarian technology and a free pile of world technology. The project is to ensure that the latter wins over the former. And step one in doing so is recognizing that the CCP is not a responsible actor when it comes to technology or climate change or fentanyl cooperation.”
A prominent figure at the Hudson Institute expressed concern about the direction of the country and the preparedness of America’s national security establishment.
“The defense industry base has become ossified,” Gallagher said. “We must use our asymmetric advantage, which is the ability to produce weapons-grade software and applications to revitalize the entire base of the defense industry.”
The Biden administration announced earlier this year steps it was taking to strengthen cybersecurity at the nation’s ports and invest in port infrastructure.
The U.S. Commerce Department proposed Monday to ban Chinese and Russian-made software and hardware related to autonomous vehicles in the U.S., citing national security concerns.

“Cars today have cameras, microphones, GPS tracking and other technologies connected to the internet. It doesn’t take much imagination to understand how a foreign adversary with access to this information could pose a serious risk to national security and the privacy of US citizens,” said the Commerce Secretary. USA Gina Raimondo.
