Fly Me to the Moon is a custom travel agency that specializes in creating unique and unforgettable experiences in Greece. With a passion for the country’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty, they design itineraries that easily introduce travelers to the authentic Greek way of life.
Last summer, when I was planning to return to Corfu, I sought out Fly Me to the Moon expertise. I wanted to explore a side of the island that I had never been to during my previous visit. Your precious insight helped me rediscover Corfu, especially at a time when the island is bustling with tourists from all over the world after another record-breaking year for tourist arrivals in post-Covid Greece. I wanted to experience Corfu without the crowds while still feeling the magic. As Fly Me To The Moon says, you can either follow the crowd or let Fly Me to the Moon show you a Greece you would never have discovered on your own.
A eternal paradise island
Corfu, or Kerkyra, is an attractive Greek island in the Ionian Sea. Famous for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, Corfu has enchanted visitors for centuries. Influenced by Venetian, French, and British rule, the island has a unique blend of cultures that is evident in its architecture, traditions, and cuisine.
From the mythical journey of Odysseus to the poetic descriptions of Shakespeare, Corfu has inspired countless legends and works of literature. The allure of the island has also attracted historical figures such as Napoleon, Empress Sissi, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. Even James Bond found himself involved in exciting adventures on the shores of Corfu.

Arriving in the evening from London, I found Corfu to be a convenient destination with many international flights. Mainly from London, you will find many direct flights arriving on the island every year (April to October). Following Fly Me To The Moon’s advice, I rented a car from a local agency (to avoid post-COVID price hikes, long lines, and redundant administrative processes) and drove to the village of Agios Prokopios.
With only one coffee shop (as well as a bar, bakery, and shop!) in the middle of the village and a permanent local population, Agios Prokopios is a peaceful oasis during peak tourist season. This small non-touristy village, where Fly Me To The Moon has arranged a traditional house to stay, is located in the heart of the island. From Agios Prokopios, I have easy access to Corfu town, both north and south of Corfu, famous beaches, and villages. Exploring Corfu from this base allowed me to avoid busy roads and traffic, especially considering the thousands of tourists visiting the island.
Corfu’s rich history and unique lifestyle
A visit to Corfu is incomplete without exploring the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, the labyrinth of Venetian architecture, cobblestone streets, and historic landmarks like the Old and New Forts. To truly appreciate Corfu’s rich history and artistic heritage, be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, and the City Art Gallery. I found myself returning to the Old Town several times, both day and night, to soak up its unique atmosphere.
In the evening, Corfu Town comes alive with narrow streets, Spianada Square, and vibrant nightlife. Enjoy delicious Corfiot cuisine at famous restaurants like Pomo d’oro, Venetsianiko Pigadi (Venetian Well), and Tο tavernaki tis Marinas. Don’t forget to try local delicacies like Pastitsada, Sofrito, Noumboulo, and Bourdetto, paired with Tsitsibira (ginger beer) or Corfiot Red Beer. For a sweet treat, enjoy Mandoles (caramelized almonds), Sykomaida (fig paste), or traditional desserts like galaktoboureko, mandole, and loukoumades at local bakeries and sweet shops – to name a few: Periklis Alexis milk shop for galaktoboureko, Papagiorgis confectionery for mandole and ice cream, and Stazi Meli for traditional loukoumades, all in the old town of Corfu.
While exploring the island and after a long day at the beach, be sure to try some of the local restaurants outside of Corfu Town. As for the Stavrodromi restaurant, located between the villages of Agios Ounoufrios and Pelekas, it offers traditional Greek cuisine, while the Grill restaurant near the village of Kastellani is a popular place with the locals. And don’t forget to eat at one of the many beach bars and restaurants around the island.
Although I visited many beaches during my trip, Agios Gordios beach was my favorite. I like to spend afternoons there at one of the beach bars and stay until after sunset, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and stunning views.
A sense of adventure
As an active traveler, I couldn’t resist spending two days exploring Corfu’s hiking trails. My first hike was from Paliokastritsa to Angelokastro Castle, a fairly challenging trek rewarded with delightful panoramic views. Along the way, I rested in the charming village of Lakones for a refreshing break and delicious yogurt with honey and nuts, admiring the stunning views of Palaokastritsa.
After the hike, I cooled off at the beautiful Palaokastritsa beach, the cool water refreshing from the hot sun. I ended up all evening there, enjoying a drink at the Aragosta Beach Club and a delicious dinner. The combination of excellent service, delicious food, and relaxed atmosphere left me with no regrets. This risotto is especially delicious!
My second hiking adventure took me to the summit of Mount Pantokrator. Starting from the beautiful old village of peritheia, I climbed the highest point of the island, enjoying the amazing view along the way. After disembarking, I explored the historic village of Old Peritheia and visited Canal D’ Amour, a beach famous for its unique rock formations.
Continuing my journey, I found Porto Timoni, one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches of Corfu. Following the recommendation of Fly Me To The Moon, I went to the village of Afionas to witness the spectacular sunset. Anemos Bar and Restaurant, a popular place to enjoy the sunset, is a must visit. Be sure to arrive early or make a reservation to secure a good table.
Everything you need to plan your trip in 2024
Royal flair and Corfu class
On my last day in Corfu, I fell in love with the royal flair. I visited the magnificent Achilleion Palace, a neoclassical palace built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) in the late 19th century. with ancient Greece. Afterwards, I explored Mon Repos Palace, the former summer home of the Greek royal family and the birthplace of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
For a delightful final meal, I dined at Flisvos The Seaside Experience, a beachfront restaurant next to the Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna. Enjoying the delicious cuisine and the amazing view from the plane landing on the island is an unforgettable experience. After dinner, I returned to Corfu Town for a night walk, exploring the narrow streets and enjoying a nightcap at Cale Larga, a popular place for quality drinks and late-night chats. I love gin and tonics with an olive twist!
If you have more time, try to escape the crowds at Agios Georgios beach (near Afionas village and Porto Timoni beach) or take a boat tour to explore hidden bays and nearby islands like Paxos and Antipaxos. While I always plan to visit this island during my trip to Corfu, I often find myself so attracted by the island itself that I end up saving it for another time. This way, I always have an excuse to come back!

You can absorb its essence, especially in unexplored places. If you just breathe and close your eyes or looking at the sky, you feel like part of the millennia, which speaks to you.
