Rumor: FEMA doesn’t have enough money to provide disaster relief for Helene.
reality:
FEMA has enough money now for response and recovery needs. If you are affected by Helene, don’t hesitate to get disaster relief as there are different types of help available for different needs.October 3, 2024
Rumor: FEMA is asking for cash donations and rejecting volunteers.
reality:
This is wrong: FEMA does not solicit or generally accept cash or volunteer donations in response to disasters. We encourage people who want to help to volunteer or donate cash to a reputable voluntary or charitable organization. After a disaster, cash is often the best way to help because it gives the most flexibility to reputable organizations working in the field to buy what they need.If you come across someone claiming to represent FEMA and asking for donations, be careful as this is a possible scam. Government employees will not ask for money.

Rumor: Funding for FEMA’s disaster response is diverted to support international efforts or related issues.
reality:
This is false. No money is diverted from disaster response needs. FEMA’s disaster response efforts and individual assistance are funded through the Disaster Relief Fund, which is a special fund for disaster efforts. Disaster Relief Fund money has not been diverted to other non-disaster-related efforts.October 3, 2024
Rumor: FEMA is seizing donations for survivors.
reality:
Rumors of FEMA refusing donations, stopping trucks or vehicles with donations, confiscating and confiscating supplies often spread after a disaster. This is all fake.FEMA does not accept donations and/or food from survivors or voluntary organizations. Donations of food, water, or other goods are handled by voluntary agencies that specialize in storing, sorting, cleaning, and distributing donated goods.
FEMA does not conduct vehicle stops or handle road closures with armed guards – that is done by local law enforcement.

reality:

There are other forms of assistance you can receive when you apply for disaster relief. While your application continues to be reviewed, you may still receive additional assistance for other needs such as support for temporary housing costs and home repairs.
