Netflix seems to have outdone itself already ahead of the festive season, with a cheesy Christmas movie based around a magical snowman with chiselled abs.
Unbelievable.
What’s more, it stars actress and 00s icon Lacey Chabert, who rose to fame as Gretchen in Mean Girls 20 years ago, opposite Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried.
Since then, she’s carved out a new niche as the Queen of Hallmark movies, appearing in more than 30 of the channel’s movies, romances with sweet but often formulaic plotlines.
Some of these are also set at Christmas time, like The Sweetest Christmas, Pride, Prejudice and Mistletoe, Christmas Waltz and Christmas at Castle Hart.
So it’s fitting for Netflix — which has given Lohan’s former co-star a platform as well with seasonal rom-coms — to swoop in and grab her for one of her Christmas movies.
And this one seems to tick all the required preposterous boxes with the usual brand of required schmaltz sprinkled through the film where the grieving widow magically brings the hot snowman to life!
Well, Frosty the Snowman is well and truly made from coal eyes, corn pipes and more traditional snowball shapes.
And this local snow sculpture is just a classically styled naked man with a very good physique.
After Kathy (Chabert) jokingly borrows this mute snowman’s scarf, she gains a new perspective on life when she meets Jack (Schitt’s Creek’s Dustin Milligan), a handsome and strange man.
She causes a ruckus in town when she climbs onto the roof and offers to push a car topless, charming the locals with her quirky and optimistic nature, also drawing the ire of Sheriff Robinson (Craig Robinson), who takes his job seriously. .
It also stars Brooklyn 99’s Joe Lo Truglio, Katy Mixon and Lauren Holly, as well as a cameo from Selling Sunset’s Christelle Stause.
While the premise of Hot Frosty sounds a little silly, the stars confirm that the message is more important and weightier than you might think.
‘We won’t spoil it, but… Kathy’s background is what really gives Hot Frosty its real, dramatic tone. And then, all these fun and silly things happened,” Milligan told Netflix’s Tudum.
Chabert added: ‘It’s really funny and light and really good. But there is also a middle line of many hearts, and all these characters are kind of going through something – whether it’s something more comedic or something more deeply rooted emotions.
Also, let’s face it, this type of movie is exactly what Christmas rom-com fans want, and anticipation is high.
‘This is exactly what I want, Netflix. EXACTLY,’ Jen posted on X, while Karlita swooned: ‘Ahhhhh omg omg November 13th can’t come soon enough.’
‘LESS LOGIC MORE HIMBOS,’ emphasized @Aimdiddles when he celebrated the released trailer, as Jennifer Wadella wrote: ‘Netflix is going hard for the holidays and I’m so excited.’
‘Movie of the Year IDC,’ declared @modytalkmovies, while Angi simply announced: ‘This will cure me.’
Amil jokingly added from Netflix: ‘The Lacey Chabert casting is a direct attack, they are coming to crown the Hallmark holiday.’
It is joined on Netflix’s festive slate by Meet Me Next Christmas starring Cristina Milian and Pentatonix, Chad Michael Murray in The Merry Gentlemen and Lohan in Our Little Secret.
After Netflix’s seasonal streaming film Falling for Christmas in 2022 and Irish Wish earlier this year, this time Lohan plays Avery, who is forced to spend Christmas under the same roof as her ex Logan (Ian Harding), after discovering that he is now. partners are brothers.
And even better, Hot Frosty even includes nods to Falling for Christmas and Mean Girls as Jack is shown watching at the end of the trailer, only for Chabert-as-Kathy to say: ‘Looks like the girl I did. to high school with.’
perfection.
Hot Frosty streams exclusively on Netflix starting Wednesday, November 13.
