The MTV Awards came to Manchester for the first time in its 30-year history on Sunday night, but somehow it didn’t feel very Mancunian.
No sign of Take That or Aitch, or Liam Gallagher – even though he won best rock star.
The organizers made some subtle nods to the city: The stage was framed in the black and yellow stripes of Factory Records, and New Order Blue Monday pumped through the speakers every time the nominees were announced.
But the event took a more global perspective, highlighting acts from Mexico, South Korea, South Africa and America – including a predictable victory for Taylor Swift in the two biggest categories of the night, best artist and video of the year.
She only appeared on video, instead spending the night watching her boyfriend, American Football player Travis Kelce, lead the Kansas City Chiefs to victory over the Denver Broncos.
But there were many other stars at the event and on the red carpet. Here are some rumors we picked up along the way.
1) Raye gives an update on the missing songbook
Two weeks ago, Raye told fans His second album has been delayed by thieves who stole a car and, with it, some notebooks full of lyrics and song ideas.
On the red carpet, she insisted the police couldn’t track her down, saying: “I just had to let it go.”
The singer says that he can’t come up with many ideas, because the act of writing frees his mind to work on other things.
“You let it go, because you think you can get it back – and now there are so many ideas that just disappear. It’s so sad.”
But the singer, who won best British artist, maintained a positive outlook.
“Everything happens for a reason. I have to start over and maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.”
2) Busta Rhymes reveals an unlikely comedy hero
The decision to bring rap legend Busta Rhymes to Manchester to receive a global icon award is not as random as it sounds.
Before rapidly developing his rap delivery, 11-year-old Rhymes spent two summers with Aunt Velma in Morecambe.
“I went to karate school, and we illegally went to nightclubs, to make a little break-dancing money,” we said.
“I remember Boy George was cool, Wham was cool,” he continued.
“But our favorite was Benny Hill. Benny Hill is still our favorite to this day. I don’t think anyone is as funny or charismatic as Benny Hill.”
So, as he watched the smutty comedy in Morecambe, did he think he would be back, winning a lifetime achievement award?
“You can’t make predictions like that,” he said. “When we first got into hip-hop, we didn’t do it for no accolades. We just did it because we loved it.
“But with that said, tonight is a dream come true.”
To honor the moment, he gave a nine-minute acceptance speech thanking everyone from his mother to the art teacher he met backstage.
“I’ve never gotten an award from MTV. Thirty-four years of recording professionally (and) this is the first time I’ve gotten an award from MTV. It feels amazing.”
3) Olly Alexander has advice for next year’s Eurovision contestants
Olly Alexander played a pre-show party on Saturday night, and could not quite believe the reception for Dizzy – the song that earned him 18th place in the Eurovision Song Contest this year.
“That went down better than at Eurovision,” he laughed, shortly before Jedward stormed the stage and caused mayhem.
At the main ceremony, Alexander was there to present the song of the year award to Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso. But he also had a few words for anyone considering representing England in next year’s contest.
“I would say to them, whoever they are, ‘Call me, and we’ll have a serious conversation about this’,” he said with a haunted look from the owner. several things appear.
4) Benson Boone has a new fan: Bez
In addition to winning best new artist, US singer Benson Boone opened the ceremony with a spectacular performance that saw him suspended mid-air on a grand piano, before pulling off a spectacular front flip from a platform on the side of the stage.
“Insurance must be crazy,” he laughs, “but I love doing it.”
One person who couldn’t believe his eyes was Happy Mondays star Bez, who called out Boone during an interview with Rita Ora.
“When you got down on the grand piano,” he said, “I thought, ‘Elton John would be gutted.'”
5) Le Sserafim escapes to the Manchester Christmas market
Manchester is home to the UK’s biggest K-Pop store and, on Sunday morning, the staff couldn’t believe that one of the genre’s biggest girl groups had landed in their city.
“Le Sserafim sent me a picture from the Christmas market,” said one of them. “It’s only five minutes from here!”
The five-piece, which has set a chart record in the US, jetted in for a first-ever UK performance, a mash-up of Chasing Lightning and 90s house banger Crazy.
But they prefer to be out on the town undisturbed.
“That’s great, we have baklava!” enthusiastic singer Huh Yun-Jin; while her bandmate Sakura tucked into a portion of fish and chips.
“It’s my first time,” she said. “I like it.”
On stage at the EMAs, the band got one of the biggest shouts of the night, despite being unknown in the UK… for now.
“Coming to Europe is something we’ve always dreamed of, so this is a reality,” Yun-Jin said. “We just want to make a good impression.”
Mission accomplished.
6) Jedward waited two hours on the red carpet
For no reason, Jedward carried out a massive attack on the international press.
“Oasis is back and Jedward is back!” they announced, before racing over to baffled German and French journalists, while singing Stop Crying Heart Out.
It went on for a fantastic two hours, as the twins, who rose to fame on The X Factor 15 years ago, insisted that “a lot of artists are inspired by Jedward”.
And, to be fair, they have evidence. Mercury Prize nominated CMAT recently said his brother had encouraged him to finish the second albumwith motivational voice messages.
“You have to think about it, in life,” explained John.
“Don’t always think of yourself as the main character. Find someone else. Serve that tennis ball and see what they do.
“It’s always about keeping that spark alive.”
They were, honestly, an absolute blast.
7) Liam Payne’s tribute is perfectly judged
Liam Payne won 12 MTV EMAs during his time in One Direction, and then used the ceremony to launch his solo career, performing his global smash hit Strip That Down at the 2017 ceremony.
It’s only natural that the show marks its demise – but striking the right tone in the midst of such a massive showbiz event isn’t easy.
In the end, her friend and collaborator Rita Ora just spoke from the heart.
“There are so many ways we’re going to honor him,” he said. “But sometimes just talking is enough.”
Directly to the camera, she shared her memories of being 31 years old, when her voice cracked.
“Liam Payne is one of the nicest people I know,” he said. “He brought so much joy to every room he entered. And he left his mark on the world.”
It is sombre and restrained, but emotionally powerful. Not only Not only crying.
8) Tyla pays tribute to Aaliyah
South African star Tyla, best known for her hit Water, took home the best R&B and Afrobeats awards.
Awards marked him straight up, after being named one of the BBC Sound 2024 – but he made sure to honor his inspiration.
On the red carpet, she wore a vintage Roberto Cavalli dress with a turquoise blue zebra print.
The same dress was previously worn by US rapper Eve at the 2000 Soul Train Awards.
And R&B legend Aaliyah wore the canary yellow version at the 2000 MTV Awards, where she won best female video for Try Again.
The ceremony was held in September 2000, less than a year before Aaliyah was tragically killed in a plane crash.
The singer is just 22 years old – the same age Tyla is now.
