EastEnders star Shane Richie has opened up about his character Alfie Moon’s shock when his ex-wife Kat Mitchell (Jessie Wallace) made the surprising move.
The pair will finally admit their feelings for each other in an upcoming scene, following the violent behavior of their son Tommy (Sonny Kendall).
Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) is forced to call social services on the teenager after seeing the bruises he inflicted on his brother Ernie’s arm.
They will also see Freddie Slater (Bobby Brazier) staying in A&E when Tommy scalded him with hot soup.
Ahead of the intervention meeting, tensions are still high between the beloved clan – and Alfie is forced to intervene.
‘For 40 years, EastEnders has shown how much you need a family’ actor Shane explains.
‘When your back is against the wall, your family is always there. Kat has cut herself off from the Slaters, so Alfie tries to convince her that the only way to get through this is with the help of the family.
After tricking Kat into meeting Jean at The Vic, she is furious with Alfie – but her impassioned speech helps the family reconcile.
While Freddie notes that there is still chemistry between the former couple, Alfie is given food for thought.
Kat and Alfie: EastEnders’ complex love story
EastEnders On-off couple Kat Slater and Alfie Moon have a long and complicated history, which began when they were part of a storyline that would take place while working behind the bar of the Queen Vic in 2002.
After finally getting together, they tied the knot on Christmas Day 2003, but they were torn apart two years later by Kat’s jealous ex, gangster Andy Hunter (Michael Higgs), who threatened to kill Alfie unless Kat slept with someone.
Realizing their feelings for one another were still there, they rekindled their marriage and left Walford for pastures new in late 2005.
Five years later, they return when it is revealed that Kat has been having an affair with Alfie’s cousin Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) and is pregnant with his son.
They eventually reconciled, with Alfie agreeing to bring Tommy up as his own. However, they were heartbroken when the baby ‘died’ – before it was later revealed that Ronnie Mitchell had actually swapped the baby with his son James, who had died from cot death.
After a joyous reunion with baby Tommy, the couple fall apart again when Kat’s relationship with Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) comes to light.
But reconciliation eventually followed – as did twin sons Bert and Ernie – before Kat and Alfie swapped Square for Spain in 2016 after winning the lottery.
Two years later, a broken Kat returns to Walford after splitting from Alfie again, after cheating on him. When he later follows her home, the pair briefly reunite before Alfie is revealed to be the father of Kat’s cousin Hayley Slater’s (Katie Jarvis) baby daughter Cherry.
With a broken relationship, Alfie does the bunk from Walford in 2019 after defrauding Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) of £50k, who later has an affair with Kat.
When Alfie returned to Albert Square again three years later, he sabotaged Kat’s wedding to Phil, but it was not enough to split up and they rescheduled their nuptials.
However, after Kat discovers Phil has been cheating on her with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit), the pair split and she moves in with Alfie.
‘The truth is Alfie will do anything for Kat and Kat is the person she wants to be when she’s with Alfie’ said Shane.
‘But both sides are fighting it now they are trying to focus on bringing the boys up and all under the same roof.’
After a difficult meeting with the social worker, Kat hopes that Tommy will be able to live with her again by Christmas. Unfortunately, the teenager remained cold towards him, but Alfie managed to break through for him a little.
Deflated from the day’s events, the couple returned to the flat and to Alfie’s surprise, Kat kissed him.
‘Alfie didn’t see it coming at all!’ Shane continued.
‘He didn’t know because Kat had been reminding him for weeks that they were just friends, and that he had no feelings for her.
‘Alfie is resigned to this and they are just going to live together as parents and bring the children together as friends.
