Less than a week after Taylor Swift endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, Donald Trump wrote in a social media post on Sunday that he hates the singer.
In a Sunday post on Truth Social, a social media platform, the former president, in an all-caps message, wrote: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
On Tuesday, Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, faced off against Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, on the ABC News debate stage in Philadelphia for the first time as the two sides clashed over several key issues such as abortion, the economy and immigration. Shortly after the debate, Swift, whose fanbase spans generations and crosses party lines, made waves in the political arena with her endorsement of Harris and a targeted push for voter registration.
In an Instagram post, where Swift did not directly attack Trump, she announced her support for Harris, praising her as a “steady, gifted leader” who can accomplish more by leading “calmly and without chaos.”
She signed the message with “Childless Cat Lady” and included a photo of her holding a cat, a clear reference to the comments that Ohio Senator JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, made in 2021, when he described the leading Democrat as “a lot of cats who don’t have child.”
In 2020, Swift endorsed President Joe Biden and Harris in an election that saw the duo win over Trump.
Since he endorsed Harris, conservative critics have continued to target the singer and diminish his influence on the political landscape.
Newsweek has reached out to a spokesperson for Swift via email for comment.
Before talking to NewsweekMark Shanahan, an American political expert at the University of Surrey in England, said that Swift will boost Harris’s appeal among the demographics he needed to win in November.
“His camp will be boosted by the decision of the biggest personal brand in global entertainment to endorse the Democratic ticket immediately after the candidates leave the stage,” he said. “Harris needs an alliance of women, youth and minorities to win this election. Swifties spread across all these categories.”
However, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday, only 6 percent said Swift’s endorsement of Harris made them more likely to vote for her; while 13 percent, instead, said it makes them less likely to support him, with 81 percent saying there is no difference.
The poll surveyed 3,276 adults including 29 percent who identified as Democrats, 29 percent who identified as Republicans and 30 percent who identified as independents. The margin of error for this sample is 2 percentage points and was conducted between September 11-13.
In response to Trump’s Sunday comments on Truth Social, the former president’s communications director Steven Cheung, in an email, addressed it Newsweek to the same ABC News poll.
Meanwhile, the former president previously praised Swift during a November 2023 interview with variety co-Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh.
“I think she’s very beautiful! I find her very beautiful. I think she’s a liberal. She probably doesn’t like Trump. I hear she’s very talented. I think she’s very beautiful, really beautiful!” Trump said about the singer.
Harris’ campaign in a statement has targeted Trump and endorsed Swift by using the mixed-up song title.
“Donald Trump’s weeks of whining and spouting conspiracy theories have Voters on both sides of the aisle ready to forget that. The American people want to get out of the Woods from the chaos and division of the Trump era, leave behind the Blank Space of Trump’s broken promises, and Start over by electing Vice President Harris to ensure the future of American opportunity Long Live,” said Harris campaign spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika.
He added: “Voters know all too well how dangerous Trump and his Project 2025 agenda are if he wins. This November, we can make sure that this is the Last Time we have to deal with the End Game to increase taxes in the middle class and ripping away Americans’ freedom. Together, we can turn the page on the Trump Era and write a new chapter where all Americans Breathe easily know we have a strong, firm leadership at the wheel of progress-and show Donald Trump that we will not return to December 2020. As before.
Trump’s Sunday comments have made the rounds on social media as critics have responded.
Former Trump aides and The View co-host, Alyssa Farah Griffin, took to X, before Twitter and wrote, “Trump had a normal Sunday morning ….”
Former Representative Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican who also recently endorsed Harris, wrote in X, “Said the smallest person who ever lived.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s comments came after Vance rejected Swift’s endorsement just hours after the debate, saying most Americans won’t be “influenced by billionaire celebrities.” Fox News host Martha MacCallum questioned the endorsement, saying many women voters could be swayed by Swift.
“I don’t think most Americans, whether they like music, are fans of him or not, are going to be influenced by billionaire celebrities who I think are fundamentally out of touch with the interests and concerns of most Americans,” Vance replied. .
